The Syrian Future Movement believes that the true building of Syria’s future begins with a review of the concepts and behaviors that govern public life. From this perspective, we join the global community in observing World Ego Awareness Day, which falls on May 11th each year.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that this day, initiated by organizations specializing in mental health and behavioral awareness (such as the World Ego Awareness Foundation), aims to highlight the dangers of an inflated ego or excessive pride that blinds individuals and leaders to reality and the needs of others. We call for replacing this with the values of humility, cooperation, and self-awareness.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that applying this concept to the current Syrian reality is a valuable national insight. Syria, which is undergoing a complex transitional phase, has suffered and continues to suffer from the conflicts of entrenched political egos. The clinging of certain parties to their narrow interests and partisan or personal agendas has prolonged the suffering of the Syrian people and fragmented the national fabric.
The Syrian Future Movement points out that international reports, including the 2024-2025 Global Peace Index, place Syria at the bottom of the list due to the lack of national consensus. We believe that the “authoritarian ego” was the biggest obstacle to implementing international resolutions (such as Resolution 2254) before liberation, resulting in more than 90% of Syrians remaining below the poverty line, according to the latest UN statistics. This is a consequence of prioritizing the preservation of narrow systems at the expense of the lives of millions.
The Syrian Future Movement adopts a future vision that links psychological and political liberation, and in this regard, offers the following recommendations:
- On the political level: We call on all Syrian forces to “set aside partisan egos” and sit at a national dialogue table that prioritizes the collective Syrian identity above all else, to ensure the success of the transitional phase.
- On the societal level: We recommend strengthening psychological and social support programs that help Syrians overcome the effects of behavioral tyranny and build a generation that believes in partnership, not exclusion.
- On the humanitarian level: We believe that the transition to a future Syria requires a culture of recognizing the other, a fundamental value that is lacking in the current reality and without which sustainable stability cannot be achieved.
The Syrian Future Movement concludes its statement by emphasizing that defeating the inflated egos in the minds of decision-makers and society is the first and essential step toward rebuilding a strong and unified Syria.
