The Syrian Future Movement is following with great interest the announcement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Monday, September 1, 2026, regarding Denmark’s reopening of its embassy in Damascus, after a closure since 2012. The reopening ceremony was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and his Danish counterpart, Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
The Syrian Future Movement also appreciates this step, which embodies the resumption of diplomatic relations between Damascus and Copenhagen after a hiatus of nearly 14 years. It confirms that Syria is gradually returning to its rightful place in the international community and that European engagement is accelerating in parallel with the progress being made in building the new state.
We see the reopening of the embassy, with Denmark being among the first EU countries to take this step, as a clear message that the transitional phase in Syria enjoys increasing confidence from Western countries, and that the stability the country is witnessing encourages the return of diplomatic presence.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that reopening embassies is a first step, and that the real challenge lies in translating this diplomatic momentum into tangible support that strengthens recovery and reconstruction efforts, contributes to improving the lives of Syrian citizens, and restores trust between Syria and the international community.
The Syrian Future Movement points out that this step comes weeks after the United Kingdom reopened its embassy in Damascus and the increasing European diplomatic presence in the Syrian capital, reflecting a shift in the European stance towards Syria and an acknowledgment of the efforts made during the transitional phase.
We see this acceleration as an indication that Europe has begun to invest in Syria’s stability and future, and realizes that isolating it is no longer a viable option.
The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the Danish Foreign Minister’s announcement of an additional $76 million allocation this year to support early recovery, stability, and the return of refugees, affirming his country’s continued support for Syria.
We view this support as a positive step in the right direction. However, we reiterate that the enormous scale of the needs requires a greater commitment from the international community, and that this aid must be directed towards sustainable development projects that benefit citizens, create jobs, and enhance stability.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that the Syrian Foreign Minister described the reopening of the embassy as a “new chapter” in relations, believing that the move could encourage other European countries to strengthen their presence and investments in Syria.
We see in this message an open invitation to the European Union countries to actively engage in the reconstruction process, capitalize on the economic opportunities offered by this new phase, and participate in building the future of Syria.
In this context, the Syrian Future Movement reiterates its consistent positions, published on its official website, which emphasize the priority of international cooperation and diplomatic openness as two fundamental pillars for building the new state:
- Statement on “Resumption of Operations at the Syrian Embassy in Libya” (dated August 31, 2026): It commended the resumption of operations at the Syrian Embassy in Libya and stressed the importance of extending this experience to all countries and opening Syrian embassies in all countries still awaiting the return of Syrian diplomatic representation.
- Statement on “Expanding UN Projects in Syria” (dated July 29, 2026): It emphasized the importance of transforming humanitarian aid into sustainable development projects, the same principle that should guide European support for Syria.
- Statement on “Memorandum of Understanding with Russia” (dated August 10, 2026): It affirmed that restoring national sovereignty and managing airports and seaports are essential steps in building an independent state, as is restoring diplomatic relations with various countries.
Based on its national responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
- Leveraging the diplomatic momentum to strengthen cooperation with the European Union and working to expand the European diplomatic presence in Damascus, as well as completing the procedures for opening embassies of other European countries. This will enhance the international community’s confidence in Syria and facilitate the flow of investments and aid.
- Directing European support towards sustainable development projects in the energy, water, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors. This will contribute to job creation, improve basic services, and enhance stability, thus maximizing the benefit derived from the aid provided.
- Enhancing transparency in the management of international aid through clear oversight mechanisms and informing the public about its distribution and use. This will strengthen donor confidence, encourage further support, and ensure that aid reaches its intended beneficiaries.
- Leveraging European expertise in governance, digital transformation, and knowledge and technology transfer to Syrian institutions. This will contribute to modernizing public administration, enhancing the efficiency of services, and supporting the administrative reform process.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the new Syria is capable of transforming this diplomatic momentum into genuine partnerships that serve development and stability and strengthen Syria’s position in the international community.
