Water crisis in the village of Al-Kanda in the western Idlib countryside

The Syrian Future Movement is following with great concern and sorrow the plight of the residents of Al-Kanda village in the western Idlib countryside, who are suffering from a severe drinking water crisis. This crisis stems from the destruction of the main water station that supplied the village from the Al-Adousiya area during the years of war. As we listen to the pleas of the approximately 100 families who have returned to their homes, we see this daily suffering as a manifestation of the significant challenges facing the return and resettlement of displaced persons. We emphasize that access to drinking water is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for any dignified and sustainable return.

Firstly, the Syrian Future Movement condemns the continued suffering of the residents of Al-Kanda village due to the scarcity of drinking water and holds the relevant authorities responsible for expediting the rehabilitation of the water station and securing the basic needs of the residents.

The Syrian Future Movement also notes that the villagers are forced to purchase water from tankers at exorbitant costs, despite their limited financial means. This places an additional burden on families who had hoped for a decent life after returning to their homes.

We urge the relevant authorities in Idlib Governorate and the Syrian government to intervene immediately to rehabilitate the water station and equip it with the necessary equipment, in line with their pledges to implement infrastructure rehabilitation projects in areas where residents have returned.

The Syrian Future Movement notes that families returning from camps are facing a lack of basic services, particularly drinking water and sanitation networks, which hinders their resettlement and creates new hardships.

The relevant authorities have announced plans to rehabilitate infrastructure in areas where residents have returned, including repairing water and electricity networks and paving roads, as part of a plan to restore basic services and improve living conditions.

We emphasize that these plans must be translated into tangible results on the ground, with priority given to areas suffering from acute crises, such as the village of Al-Kanda.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its unwavering support for the return of displaced persons and the provision of essential services, as published on its official website. This includes:

  • The statement “Displaced Persons of Ras al-Ayn Demand a Safe Return” (dated July 7, 2026), which expressed solidarity with the displaced and emphasized that a safe return cannot be achieved without ensuring basic services.
  • The study “Reconstruction Priorities in Syria” (dated December 20, 2024), which affirmed that rehabilitating water infrastructure and essential services is a top priority to guarantee the return of displaced persons and achieve stability and sustainable development.

Based on its national responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  • Expediting the rehabilitation of the water station in the village of Al-Kinda and equipping it with the necessary equipment, and securing urgent funding for this project, in line with the commitments made by relevant authorities to implement infrastructure rehabilitation projects.
  • Providing temporary solutions to secure drinking water for residents by distributing water via tankers at reduced or free prices until rehabilitation work is completed, thus alleviating the financial burden on families.
  • Including the water crisis in the village of Al-Kinda among the priorities of reconstruction plans in Idlib Governorate, and ensuring that water infrastructure projects are part of a comprehensive national plan for the return of displaced persons.
  • Establishing community monitoring mechanisms, with the participation of village councils and the local community, to follow up on the implementation of rehabilitation projects, ensure transparency, and prevent any delays or shortcomings.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its absolute solidarity with the residents of Al-Kinda village and affirms that their suffering is a national and moral responsibility that requires urgent action.

We believe that the Syrian government and relevant authorities are called upon today to respond to these appeals and demonstrate that the new Syria is capable of meeting the needs of its citizens and ensuring that the return home is the beginning of a dignified life, not a continuation of suffering.

The Syrian Future Movement will remain supportive, critical, and vigilant regarding this issue, striving to build the new Syria on the foundations of justice, dignity, and sustainable development.
