The Syrian Future Movement joins the international community in celebrating International Day of the Midwife, observed annually on May 5th.
On this occasion, we honor the fundamental pillar of the human right to life and safe childbirth, and we remember the heroic role of Syrian midwives who have continued their work under the most exceptional circumstances our country is experiencing.
The Syrian Future Movement recalls the reports issued by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Health Organization, which confirm that investment in midwifery can prevent approximately 67% of maternal deaths and 64% of neonatal deaths.
In the Syrian context, we believe that the importance of this role is amplified by the challenges facing the health sector, where midwifery plays a pivotal role in:
- Reducing morbidity rates through specialized care during pregnancy and after childbirth.
- Providing psychological and social support, as midwives are the closest link to Syrian families during their most critical moments.
- Response in crisis zones where midwives emerge as lifesavers in areas with limited access to central hospitals.
The Syrian Future Movement, based on its national vision that connects Syria’s future to the global civilizational system, believes that advancing midwifery in Syria is an investment in “human national security.”
We also see the Syrian midwife as an ambassador of the human values that unite us with the world, and as a cornerstone in building a healthy and thriving society.
Through this statement, the Syrian Future Movement calls for:
- Strengthening academic qualifications: Aligning midwifery curricula in Syria with modern international standards to ensure quality care.
- Protection and empowerment: Providing a safe working environment for midwives and ensuring their legal and professional protection, especially in remote areas and camps.
- International integration: Activating partnerships with international organizations to exchange expertise and transfer modern medical technology in the field of obstetrics and childcare.
In conclusion, the Syrian Future Movement extends its deepest respect and appreciation to every midwife on earth in general and in Syria in particular, affirming that the hand of the midwife that receives life is the same hand that will build Syria’s bright future, based on respect for human dignity and everyone’s right to health care befitting the twenty-first century.
