The Syrian Future Movement follows with deep concern the tensions and violence that unfolded in the city of Tal Abyad, in the northern part of Raqqa province, on Monday, October 26, 2026. These events occurred as groups of displaced persons and those forced from their homes arrived to demand the recovery of their properties and land.
The incidents resulted in the destruction and burning of at least twenty vehicles, and the trapping of several families inside the district administration building—a situation that threatens civil peace and revives the patterns of chaos and lawlessness that the Syrian people have long endured.
The Syrian Future Movement strongly condemns all forms of aggression against civilians and their property, regardless of the perpetrators or their motives. We maintain that violence, vandalism, gunfire, and the burning of vehicles are entirely unacceptable and condemnable, and cannot be justified under any pretext.
At the same time, we affirm that the right to a safe and dignified return, and the recovery of property, is a legitimate right for every Syrian who can prove ownership through legal documentation. Such matters must not be resolved through force, aggression, or mutual incitement.
The Syrian Future Movement categorically rejects any attempt to exploit these incidents to stir up ethnic or nationalistic tensions, or to transform a complex humanitarian and human rights issue into a tool for division among the people of the same nation.
The Syria we strive to build is one that belongs to all its citizens—across all their diverse components—founded upon the rule of law and equal citizenship, rather than upon the logic of domination or exclusion. The Syrian Future Movement notes the slow initial security response and the absence of prior organizational arrangements that could have contained the tension and prevented the situation from deteriorating to this extent.
It calls upon the relevant authorities within the transitional government to take the following actions:
- Conduct a transparent and urgent investigation into the sequence of events, precisely determine responsibilities, and hold accountable all those found to be involved in acts of violence, sabotage, or attacks on property.
- Ensure full protection for those returning and those seeking to recover their property, and guarantee that all return and handover processes are conducted exclusively through official legal and administrative mechanisms.
- Expedite the establishment of clear, fair, and transparent mechanisms to address property-related issues—mechanisms that prevent exploitation and extortion, and forestall chaos or confrontations on the ground.
- Strengthen the presence of state security and judicial institutions in the region to maintain public order and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
The Syrian Future Movement maintains that protecting civil peace and upholding the dignity of every Syrian citizen is a duty that allows for no compromise.
Reflecting the concerns of the Syrian public and their commitment to the unity of the national fabric, the Syrian Future Movement reaffirms its intent to continue exercising its oversight and advocacy role, pressing the transitional government to fully assume its responsibilities in protecting all Syrians and in consolidating a state governed by the rule of law—a state where there is no place for violence, discrimination, or the use of force.
