The Syrian Future Movement follows with great interest and appreciation the significant medical achievement announced on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, with the inauguration of the brachytherapy system at Al-Biruni University Hospital in the Al-Mowasat Medical Complex in Damascus. The inauguration was attended by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Chairman of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, Mudar Al-Akleh, and the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Administrative Affairs, Abeer Qudsi.
We see this as a qualitative leap in the field of cancer treatment and a response to a pressing need for patients who have long suffered from a lack of specialized radiotherapy services. This will contribute to raising recovery rates and alleviating the suffering of thousands of patients.
The Syrian Future Movement commends this step, which provides brachytherapy technology. This technique involves placing a small radioactive source inside or near the tumor to deliver a focused dose of radiation to cancer cells while minimizing its impact on surrounding healthy tissue.
We highly appreciate the statement by the head of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, Mudar Al-Akleh, that the operation of the system represents “a pivotal step in enhancing Syria’s treatment and research capabilities in the field of oncology,” and his indication that the device was provided as part of the “Rays of Hope” initiative.
We also see this achievement as an embodiment of effective international cooperation in serving the health sector, a genuine investment in the health of citizens, and a reflection of the state’s commitment to harnessing peaceful nuclear technologies to serve patients and society.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that the head of the Radiotherapy Department at Al-Biruni Hospital, Hussein Sabbagh, confirmed that the use of the device contributes to raising the cure rates for cervical cancer patients to between 90 and 95%.
He explained that the device allows for the delivery of a high radiation dose in a short time, compared to the low-energy devices previously used, thus shortening the preparation time and treatment sessions, and reducing side effects.
The Syrian Future Movement commends this progress, which will provide free treatment for approximately 550 to 600 patients annually, given the increasing number of cervical cancer cases diagnosed each year in Syria, which ranges between 650 and 700.
The Movement also notes that this step is part of ongoing efforts to develop oncology services and expand patient access to advanced treatment technologies, following the Atomic Energy Commission’s announcement on June 16th of the commencement of this system’s installation.
The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its unwavering support for developing the health sector and ensuring the quality of medical services, as published on its official website, including:
- The statement “1.2 Million Syrians in Urgent Need of Intervention” (dated July 9, 2026), which emphasized the need to direct international attention to the suffering of civilians and to provide sufficient funding for the humanitarian response, including health services.
- The statement regarding the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent Doctors Association (IDA) (dated June 19, 2026) welcomed international partnerships in developing the health sector and emphasized the importance of knowledge transfer and upgrading medical equipment.
- The statement regarding the launch of mobile medical clinics in Quneitra (dated July 11, 2026) commended the efforts made to provide healthcare to remote and underserved areas.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that the true success of this system is not measured by the size of the equipment, but rather by its ability to achieve tangible change in the reality of healthcare services and the long-term sustainability of this impact.
The Syrian Future Movement further notes that the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the continued provision of equipment and training for Syrian personnel, including the supply of a CT scanner and a PET/CT scanner.
Based on its national responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
- Ensuring the sustainability of the system’s operation by allocating regular budgets for maintenance and securing the necessary medical supplies, and providing continuous technical support to the staff operating it, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s commitment to providing ongoing training.
- Expanding the scope of treatment services to include other types of tumors, and working to secure more high-quality medical equipment, similar to the announced plan to procure advanced imaging devices.
- Strengthening health awareness regarding the importance of early cancer detection, especially cervical cancer, through national campaigns targeting women in various governorates, to ensure maximum benefit from this advanced treatment technology.
- Documenting the experience and transferring expertise to other hospitals and health centers in the governorates, thus contributing to disseminating the benefits and raising the level of treatment services throughout Syria, similar to training medical personnel abroad.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms its welcome of this important medical achievement, which demonstrates the Syrian state’s commitment to developing the health sector and improving the quality of life for its citizens, a commitment we support. The Syrian Future Movement highly values the efforts of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in achieving this accomplishment.
We emphasize that investing in the health of citizens is an investment in the future of Syria, and a message of hope that the new Syria is capable of overcoming its challenges and building a developed health sector worthy of the sacrifices and aspirations of its people.
We call upon the Syrian government and international partners to work together to ensure the sustainability of this progress and expand its scope, so that it may serve as a model of successful cooperation in the health sector and a source of improved lives for citizens, building the new Syria on the foundations of dignity and social justice.
For its part, the Syrian Future Movement will remain supportive, critical, and vigilant regarding this matter, striving to build the new Syria on the foundations of sustainable development and social justice.
