The Syrian Future Movement follows with great appreciation and pride the statement issued by the sheikhs and residents of Jaramana on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in which they affirmed their commitment to the unity of Syria and the integrity of its national fabric, and their categorical rejection of the offensive chants raised by some young men on the sidelines of a memorial service commemorating the victims of the Suwaida events.
While commending this responsible national stance, the Movement considers it a model to be emulated in dealing with sensitive national moments, and an embodiment of the spirit of citizenship based on mutual respect and the rejection of hatred.
First: The Syrian Future Movement appreciates the position of the residents of Jaramana and commends their national awareness and their proactive approach in containing any practices that might be misunderstood or exploited to incite discord, considering it a model of social responsibility.
We also commend this position expressed by the sheikhs and residents of Jaramana, which affirmed that the unacceptable chants made by some young men “do not represent the city’s position nor reflect the values of its people.” We highly value their statement affirming that “Jaramana is an integral part of the Ghouta of Damascus, and that its residents are partners in building a unified Syria,” and their rejection of all “speeches that incite sedition and harm the national fabric.”
We also see in this stance an embodiment of national awareness that transcends emotional reactions, embracing wisdom and foresight, and reflecting a deep understanding that Syria’s future can only be built through the unity of its people, respect for its institutions, and the rule of law.
Secondly, the Syrian Future Movement recalls that the vigil organized by the residents of Jaramana to commemorate the victims of the Suwaida events, which was held in coordination with state institutions, embodies the spirit of national solidarity that should prevail among all Syrians.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that the residents of Jaramana held a vigil on Monday, July 13, 2026, in the Waqf Hall, to commemorate the first anniversary of the July 2025 events in Suwaida Governorate, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,760 people, according to the report issued by the National Commission of Inquiry. We welcome this humanitarian gesture, which reflects solidarity with the families of the victims and affirms that the wound of Suwaida is a national wound that affects all Syrians.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that this demonstration comes a year after the bloody events and the subsequent official actions concerning the investigation and justice process. The final report of the National Investigation Committee was submitted, and the first trial session began in early July 2026, confirming that the accountability process will include all those proven to be involved or inciting violence, regardless of their position or status.
Thirdly, the Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that such offensive chants, despite their rejection by the residents of Jaramana, remain an indication of real challenges to building trust and national cohesion, and that addressing them requires comprehensive societal and institutional awareness.
The Syrian Future Movement draws attention to the fact that this incident, despite its swift containment by the sheikhs and wise men of Jaramana, demonstrates that there are voices attempting to test the national fabric and exploit emotions to incite discord. We reiterate that the transitional phase Syria is undergoing requires societal and institutional vigilance to confront all attempts at division and fragmentation.
In this context, we recall our statement issued on July 14, 2026, entitled “A Year Since the Suwaida Events,” in which we stressed that “any attempt to exploit this tragedy to secede from Syria and seek support from Israel is a betrayal of the blood that was shed and a perpetuation of the division that serves the enemies of national unity.”
Fourth: Based on its national responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
- Strengthening the culture of dialogue, tolerance, and the rejection of hatred by launching national awareness campaigns targeting all segments of society, emphasizing that Syrian diversity is a source of strength, not weakness, and that Syria’s future can only be built through the unity of its people and respect for its institutions.
- Activating the role of religious and social institutions in containing any practices that could harm national unity, following the example set by the sheikhs and elders of Jaramana in containing the situation and emphasizing that the unacceptable chants did not represent the city’s position.
- Accelerating the completion of the transitional justice and accountability process, given its role in deterring any attempts to exploit collective suffering for narrow agendas and ensuring that justice is the foundation upon which civil peace is built.
- Strengthening coordination between state institutions and local communities in organizing commemorative events to ensure that these events are appropriate expressions of national solidarity, free from any practices that could be misinterpreted or exploited to incite discord.
The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its welcome of this responsible national stance taken by the people of Jaramana and highly values their awareness and understanding of the importance of national unity at this critical juncture.
We affirm that the new Syria needs the combined efforts of all its citizens, the rejection of all rhetoric that threatens its cohesion, and working together to build a future of peace, dignity, and justice for all.
