World Day to Combat Heat and Climate Change

The Syrian Future Movement joins the international community today, June 2, 2026, in commemorating “World Heat Action Day,” an annual global event dedicated to raising awareness of the existential risks of record-breaking temperatures and mitigating the severe impacts of climate change on human life, ecosystems, and the economy.

On this occasion, the Syrian Future Movement issues the following vision and position:

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that climate change and global warming are a direct security and livelihood challenge that directly affects the daily lives of Syrian citizens and threatens the country’s water and food security in an unprecedented manner.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the humanitarian and national values that this day calls for, foremost among them “environmental justice,” the right of Syrians to live in a safe and sustainable environment, and the protection of the most vulnerable groups—such as displaced persons in camps and workers in exposed sectors—from deadly heat waves.

The Syrian Future Movement bases its assessment on recent reports issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the World Meteorological Organization for 2025/2026, which classify the Mediterranean and Middle East region as a “hotspot” where drought and heat waves are increasing at a rate 20% faster than the global average, necessitating immediate response strategies.

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its deep concern regarding field reports from within Syria, which document the alarming decline in the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers prior to this year’s events, the desertification of fertile agricultural lands in the Syrian Jazeera region, and the recurring forest fires on the Syrian coast. It believes these indicators are accelerating the collapse of the agricultural sector and exacerbating poverty and internal displacement.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that Syria’s integration into the civilized international community requires a genuine commitment to international environmental agreements, foremost among them the Paris Climate Agreement, and the development of a comprehensive national plan for transitioning to a “green economy” and renewable energy (solar and wind) as sustainable and clean alternatives.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on research centers, Syrian universities, and civil society organizations to join forces to develop innovative, locally-based solutions, such as developing early warning systems for heat waves, modernizing irrigation networks to conserve water, and reforesting Syrian cities to combat the phenomenon of “urban heat islands.”

The Syrian Future Movement concludes its statement by emphasizing that building a modern and developed Syria of the future is inseparable from protecting its land and environment. Sustainable political and economic stability cannot be achieved without a resilient and robust environment, and the commitment to preserving the planet is the common thread that connects our national sentiment with our global humanitarian responsibility.
