Tal al-Mallouhi was born in Homs in 1991 and raised in a Syrian family with a strong interest in culture and literature.
She rose to prominence early on through her writings on her personal blog, where she addressed humanitarian, national, and political issues in a striking, youthful style.
She was arrested by the Syrian regime in late 2009, at a young age, because of her opinions and writings published online.
Her case became one of the most prominent cases of freedom of expression in Syria before the outbreak of the Syrian revolution.
Her arrest sent shockwaves through Arab and international human rights and cultural circles, and human rights organizations launched continuous campaigns demanding her release.
She became a symbol of the suffering of Syrian youth seeking to freely express their opinions in the face of the regime’s security apparatus.
With the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011, her case was invoked as an early example of the repression that preceded the revolution and paved the way for the explosion of popular Syrian anger.
She spent many years in detention, becoming one of the most prominent Syrian female political prisoners in contemporary national memory.
Her name became synonymous with the values of freedom, freedom of expression, and the rejection of tyranny, and she became a symbol for an entire generation of Syrians who paid a heavy price for speaking out.
Her story remains a testament to the suffering of Syrian detainees, both men and women, and to the necessity of achieving justice and uncovering the fate of all those who have disappeared or been forcibly disappeared.
We in the Syrian Future Movement, in recognition of her being an early symbol of freedom of speech, and of the long suffering she endured in order to express her opinion, and because her case was one of the issues that revealed the nature of the tyranny against which the Syrians later revolted, and in gratitude to the free figures of Syria who contributed to establishing the values of freedom, dignity and justice, we present the Syrian Future Movement shield this week to Mrs. Tal Al-Mallouhi, a symbolic Syrian shield that carries our vision and our comprehensive national approach, in appreciation of her journey and steadfastness, and wishing her continued goodness and wellness, and for Syria a future worthy of the sacrifices of its sons and daughters.
