Global Parents Day

June 1st of each year marks “Global Parents Day,” an international occasion established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to honor fathers and mothers worldwide and recognize their boundless dedication and sacrifices in raising children and building families, which form the cornerstone of stable societies and shaping the future.

This year, 2026, this occasion highlights the noble human values of giving, compassion, and shared responsibility at a time when families face immense challenges, particularly in areas of conflict and political and social upheaval.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that Global Parents Day is an opportunity for serious national and humanitarian reflection on the reality of Syrian families, who have borne the brunt of the crisis throughout the years and have been considered the first line of defense for societal values and cohesion.

We also emphasize that caring for parents and ensuring their financial and psychological well-being is a fundamental pillar of our global humanitarian vision. A stable family is the nucleus capable of producing a conscious generation that contributes to building social peace and sustainable development. The Syrian Future Movement expresses its deep concern regarding statistics issued by international and local organizations, which indicate that more than 90% of Syrian families live below the poverty line. Hundreds of thousands of families are headed by single mothers (female-headed households) due to the loss, arrest, or enforced disappearance of their male relatives. This situation exacerbates the burden placed on the remaining fathers in extremely complex economic circumstances.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the transitional phase Syria is undergoing necessitates a comprehensive national approach that considers the changing social roles within the family and empowers parents as essential partners in the psychological and educational reconstruction of future generations.

  • Based on its vision, the Syrian Future Movement proposes a set of values and principles to guide this phase:
  • Social and national solidarity, through strengthening community safety nets to support the most vulnerable families.
  • Justice and equity, through providing care for the families of martyrs, detainees, and the missing, and guaranteeing their legal and financial rights.

Looking ahead, the Syrian Future Movement believes that investing in child development by empowering parents economically and intellectually is crucial, as family stability today is essential for national security tomorrow. The movement recommends establishing a “National Fund to Support the Syrian Family” to provide direct financial grants and comprehensive healthcare to parents in vulnerable families, particularly the elderly and single mothers.

The Syrian Future Movement also calls on international organizations, governmental bodies, and local authorities to launch sustainable economic empowerment programs (micro- and small enterprises) that enable parents to secure a dignified income, preserving their family’s dignity and eliminating their reliance on temporary relief aid. The movement proposes developing and enacting flexible employment policies that consider the needs of parents during the reconstruction phase, such as extending maternity and paternity leave and providing childcare centers (nurseries) in workplaces to ensure parents remain productive. The Syrian Future Movement urges the launch of free, national psychological and social counseling campaigns to help parents cope with the trauma of war and empower them to practice positive parenting techniques to protect their children from the effects of violence and instability.

The Syrian Future Movement appeals to the international community and all relevant parties to facilitate mechanisms for reuniting Syrian families scattered between countries of refuge and within Syria itself, given the devastating impact of the absence of one or both parents on the educational and psychological development of future generations.

The Syrian Future Movement, while saluting Syrian fathers and mothers both inside and outside the country, bows in reverence to their silent sacrifices and resilience in the face of crises, and renews its commitment to working tirelessly towards a future Syria—a Syria of dignity, justice, and family stability.
