The Syrian Future Movement is closely following the meetings held by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on August 6, 2026, and the accompanying political and security discussions with Turkish officials, including the head of Turkish intelligence, at this highly sensitive time for Syria and the region.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that this visit should not be viewed in isolation from the meeting hosted by the People’s Palace in Damascus a few days prior, which brought together President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and the Governor of Deir ez-Zor with Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed. This meeting reflects the ongoing efforts to address outstanding national issues through political dialogue, avoiding confrontation.
Connecting these two events reveals that the Syrian state is pursuing two parallel and complementary tracks: an internal track aimed at reintegrating all Syrian components within the framework of a unified state, and an external track seeking to build regional understandings, particularly with the Republic of Turkey, which will positively impact border security, the stability of northern Syria, and the future of the entire region. The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the success of any internal dialogue remains contingent upon responsible regional understandings, as many of the complexities of the Syrian issue are no longer purely internal matters, but have become intertwined with the interests and security of neighboring countries, most notably Turkey.
At the same time, the Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that any political or security understandings must be based on inviolable principles, foremost among them the unity of the Syrian Arab Republic, its full sovereignty over its territory, and the rejection of all projects of partition, secession, or the imposition of facts on the ground by force of arms.
The Syrian Future Movement also believes that dialogue, however important, should not become a substitute for building state institutions or extending the rule of law throughout all of Syria. The country’s stability can only be achieved with a single state, a single national army, single legitimate institutions, and a single sovereign decision-making body.
The Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
- The continuation of national dialogue with all Syrian parties that believe in the unity of the country, with the transformation of political meetings into clear and time-bound implementation agreements.
- Strengthening Syrian-Turkish coordination to serve the security of both countries, stabilize borders, combat terrorism, and create conditions for the safe and dignified return of displaced persons and refugees.
- Emphasizing, in all internal and external discussions, the rejection of any separatist project or any arrangements that undermine the unity and sovereignty of the Syrian state.
- Involving constitutional institutions and community stakeholders in shaping the future of conflict-affected areas, thereby strengthening national trust and ensuring the sustainability of solutions.
- Adopting transparency in presenting the outcomes of important meetings to the public, thereby enhancing trust between the state and its citizens and reducing rumors and misinterpretations.
The Syrian Future Movement views dialogue as a means to nation-building, not an end in itself. It believes that the success of foreign policy is measured by its ability to serve the Syrian people, just as the success of internal dialogue is measured by its ability to strengthen national unity, consolidate sovereignty, and achieve security and stability for all its citizens.
