Release of Syrians detained in Libya

The Syrian Future Movement is following with interest the news of the release of a number of Syrian citizens who were detained in Libya and their return home. This step reflects the importance of cooperation between official bodies in both countries to address the humanitarian and legal issues concerning Syrian citizens abroad.

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its satisfaction with this step, as it represents a humanitarian and legal response that contributes to preserving the dignity of Syrian citizens. It also affirms that addressing the situations of detainees must be done within the framework of respect for the rule of law and the guarantee of legal and human rights, far removed from any violation of human dignity or fundamental rights.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that this release should serve as a starting point for addressing the situations of the remaining Syrian citizens who still face legal or humanitarian problems abroad, whether they are detained, lack official documents, or are stranded in exceptional circumstances. This should ensure they receive a fair trial or are returned to their homeland once the legal grounds for their continued detention no longer exist.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that protecting Syrian citizens abroad is an ongoing national responsibility that necessitates strengthening consular presence, activating communication channels with authorities in brotherly and friendly countries, and providing the necessary legal and humanitarian support to citizens wherever they may be, while respecting the laws and sovereignty of host countries.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of combating irregular migration and human trafficking networks that exploit difficult economic and humanitarian conditions, pushing many young people onto unsafe routes that expose them to detention, exploitation, or loss of life.

Based on the above, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  • Continuing diplomatic and consular efforts to monitor the conditions of all detained or imprisoned Syrian citizens abroad and working to guarantee their legal and human rights.
  • Strengthening judicial and consular cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the State of Libya to ensure the swift resolution of pending cases and respect for legal procedures in both countries.
  • Providing effective legal and consular mechanisms to monitor the conditions of Syrians abroad, particularly those without documentation, those detained, and those most vulnerable to exploitation.
  • Intensify awareness campaigns about the dangers of irregular migration and human trafficking networks, and promote awareness of safe and legal pathways for travel and employment.
  • Develop national programs for the social and economic reintegration of returnees, and provide them with the necessary legal and psychological support to help them resume their lives in a stable manner.
  • Establish a national database of Syrian citizens detained, missing, or held abroad, to facilitate coordination of official, human rights, and humanitarian efforts to monitor their situations.
  • Address the economic and social factors that drive young people to irregular migration by providing job opportunities, promoting development, and establishing an environment of stability and the rule of law within Syria.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the dignity and rights of Syrian citizens must remain at the forefront of national priorities, and that protecting Syrians wherever they may be is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among state institutions, human rights bodies, and humanitarian organizations, thereby strengthening trust in the state and enshrining the values of justice and the rule of law.
