Repairing bridges and developing vital roads in Syria

The Syrian Future Movement is closely following the announcement by the Ministries of Transport and Finance, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, of an urgent government plan to rehabilitate vital bridges and roads across the country, prioritizing the governorates of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor.

This plan was issued after a meeting that included Minister of Transport Ya’rub Badr, Minister of Finance Muhammad Yasser Barnieh, and the Director of the General Authority for Road Transport, Mu’adh Najjar.

The plan states that the work will include the immediate commencement of repairs to damaged bridges, securing the necessary funding from the current 2026 budget, and launching a three-year project to develop and expand the main road network connecting most Syrian governorates.

The plan includes strategic projects, most notably the rehabilitation of the Nassib-Daraa-Damascus-Aleppo axis and the Damascus-Palmyra-Deir ez-Zor road, in addition to studying the financing of new bridges over the Euphrates River.

The Syrian Future Movement commends this plan and appreciates the government’s approach to rebuilding damaged infrastructure. It also values the focus on rehabilitating vital bridges and roads, particularly in the Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor governorates, which have suffered greatly from the ravages of war.

We recall the strategic importance of this step, which will expedite internal transportation, alleviate the suffering of citizens, and strengthen connectivity between governorates.

We also appreciate the coordination between the Ministries of Transport and Finance to secure the necessary funding within the current year’s budget, reflecting a serious commitment to implementing these projects.

The Syrian Future Movement points to the economic and developmental importance of the road and bridge projects included in the plan. The Syrian transportation network is considered the backbone of the national economy, connecting production and consumption centers with urban and rural areas.

This plan gains its significance from its inclusion of projects to rehabilitate strategic routes linking Syria to regional and international road networks. Perhaps the most prominent of these is the Nassib-Daraa-Damascus-Aleppo road, which represents a vital artery for trade and transportation between the north and south of the country and is directly connected to the Nassib border crossing with Jordan.

The rehabilitation of the Damascus-Palmyra-Deir ez-Zor road also contributes to improving the delivery of humanitarian aid to eastern regions and supporting domestic tourism.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its firm positions supporting the reconstruction of infrastructure and the improvement of services, which have been published on its official website, including:

  • The statement on the “Launch of the National Platform for Damage Assessment in Damascus” (dated May 11, 2026), which emphasized that transparency and combating corruption are essential conditions for the success of any national project, especially in the reconstruction file, of which this project is a part.
  • The study “Reconstruction Priorities in Syria” (dated December 19, 2024), which indicated that rehabilitating transportation infrastructure is a top priority to facilitate the movement of goods and people and stimulate economic activity, which is consistent with the objectives of this plan.
  • The statement regarding the “Agreement for the Operation of the Dry Ports in Adra and Aleppo” (dated May 20, 2026) emphasized that developing logistical infrastructure (including roads and bridges) is a prerequisite for attracting investments and improving the business environment.

While the Syrian Future Movement appreciates these positive steps, it recalls past experiences where numerous projects faltered due to weak coordination, lack of transparency, or delays in disbursing funds.

To ensure the plan’s successful implementation, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  • Announcing transparent implementation mechanisms and regular monitoring, establishing clear timelines for each phase of implementation, appointing an independent oversight body to monitor progress, and issuing public quarterly reports on the progress of each project.
  • Ensuring the sustainability of funding and adequate resource allocation, and urging the government to allocate sufficient funds in future budgets (especially in the three-year plan) to complete the announced projects, rather than relying solely on initial funding that may only cover the initial phase.
  • Engaging local and international expertise to ensure quality is crucial, along with the necessity of contracting with specialized (national and international) consulting firms and offices to oversee rehabilitation processes and establish technical specifications. This will guarantee that the rehabilitated bridges and roads can withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions. The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its welcome of this government initiative, which constitutes an important first step towards the reconstruction of Syria and its reconnection.

We call upon the government to translate these statements into tangible projects on the ground and to open the door to transparent competition for Syrian, Arab, and international companies to participate in rebuilding what the war has destroyed.

We believe that building a new Syria is not limited to rebuilding what has been destroyed, but also includes building a state of institutions and the rule of law, one that prioritizes transparency and accountability above all else. The Syrian Future Movement will remain a supporter, critic, and monitor of this process, striving to build a new Syria on the foundations of sustainable development and social justice.
