World Waste Day

The Syrian Future Movement celebrates World Waste Day, which falls on Monday, March 30, 2026. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution A/RES/77/161 and is overseen by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

This year, the focus is on combating food waste as a major driver of the environmental crisis.

Approximately one billion tons of food are discarded annually (about one-fifth of the food available to consumers), while humans generate 2.1–2.3 billion tons of municipal solid waste, a figure projected to rise to 3.8 billion tons by 2050 if urgent action is not taken.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of this day in Syria, which faces complex environmental challenges as a result of years of conflict and displacement. Solid waste management has become a national priority in the reconstruction phase.

The focus on waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable consumption aligns with the Syrian Future Movement’s vision for a future Syria capable of transforming environmental challenges into development opportunities.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that waste management during the transitional phase is a fundamental pillar for social stability, public health, and building a circular economy. The Syrian Future Movement also emphasizes that the future of Syria cannot be built at the expense of the environment, and that any successful reconstruction plan must integrate the principles of “zero waste” among its priorities.

The Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  • Developing a comprehensive national waste management strategy that focuses on waste segregation at the source, recycling, and composting organic waste, prioritizing major cities such as Aleppo, Damascus, Homs, Idlib, Hasakah, and Latakia.
  • Engaging civil society, youth, and women in awareness programs and local projects to reduce food waste and promote a circular economy.
  • Linking waste management policies to plans for the safe return of displaced persons and the rehabilitation of infrastructure, while leveraging international technical cooperation without compromising sovereignty.
  • Allocating sustainable resources to establish modern treatment centers and develop stringent environmental legislation to protect future generations.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the World Day for the Elimination of Waste represents an opportunity for Syria to transform its environmental suffering into a sustainable development model that guarantees a clean and healthy environment for all its citizens in a state of law and environmental justice.
