The Security Council approves the extension of the UN force’s mission in the Golan Heights.

The Syrian Future Movement is following with great interest and a profound sense of national responsibility the international developments concerning the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2811 of 2025, adopted unanimously on December 29, 2025, extending the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for an additional six months, until June 30, 2026.

The Syrian Future Movement appreciates the international efforts exerted to maintain stability in the region and values UNDOF’s role in monitoring the ceasefire and separating the forces. The Syrian Future Movement also emphasizes the necessity of balancing the requirements of temporary security with the obligations of international law, which form the basis for restoring full Syrian sovereignty over its territory and achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.

The Syrian Future Movement recalls that the roots of this issue go back to Israel’s occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights during the June 1967 war, when it seized approximately 1,200 square kilometers of Syrian territory. This was followed by the October 1973 war, the ceasefire under UN Security Council Resolution 338 of 1973, the Disengagement Agreement of May 31, 1974, and the establishment of the UNDOF force under Resolution 350 of 1974. This culminated in Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights in December 1981, a move rejected by the international community and deemed null and void.

The Syrian Future Movement points out that recent events, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, 2014, have witnessed an unprecedented Israeli escalation, including the occupation of the Syrian buffer zone and the execution of almost daily military incursions into southern Syria, despite the absence of any threats from the new Syrian administration.

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its appreciation for the Security Council’s decision to extend the mandate of UNDOF, which reflects an international consensus on the importance of maintaining calm in the region. It also calls for strengthening the force’s role to ensure its freedom of movement without hindrance from the Israeli occupation forces.

The Syrian Future Movement further emphasizes that this extension should be a temporary step towards the full implementation of international resolutions, including Resolutions 242 and 338, which demand an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for a gradual transition towards a comprehensive and peaceful solution that guarantees the restoration of Syrian sovereignty over the Golan Heights. This should take into account the transitional circumstances in the initial phase, through international mechanisms for indirect dialogue and confidence-building. The Syrian Future Movement views these developments with a national and forward-looking perspective, prioritizing the unity of the Syrian people and their supreme interest above all else. It considers the return of the occupied territories fundamental to building a new Syria as a strong and sovereign state.

The Syrian Future Movement calls upon the international community, particularly the permanent members of the Security Council, to exert pressure for the implementation of international resolutions and to launch a comprehensive national and regional dialogue aimed at formulating lasting peace agreements that protect Syria’s borders and enhance regional stability.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that building the future Syria requires a joint effort to overcome occupation and conflicts, and to create a future that brings everyone together under the umbrella of international law and justice.
