Rain-seeking prayer and the drought crisis

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the call by the Syrian Ministry of Religious Endowments to hold prayers for rain in all governorates next Friday, November 14, 2025, beseeching God Almighty for rain after the delayed rainfall and the severe drought affecting the agricultural season, which threatens food security, particularly the wheat crop, according to reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The Syrian Future Movement believes that this blessed call reflects a spirit of religious and national responsibility in linking action with supplication, and strengthens social cohesion in the face of environmental and climate challenges.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that holding the prayer in a large mosque or a spacious public square strengthens the community’s presence and makes collective supplication a testament to the unity of the people. This is based on the Shafi’i and Hanbali schools of thought, which encourage public gatherings for prayers of common interest.

The Syrian Future Movement reminds us of the virtue of wearing simple or modest clothing during prayer, as mentioned in books of Islamic jurisprudence, to reflect humility and dependence on God Almighty, and to make prayer a unique spiritual experience combining religious and social symbolism. We also remind you that raising one’s hands in supplication for rain, mercy, and goodness for the country and its people, along with seeking forgiveness, is a recommended practice in all schools of Islamic jurisprudence. The supplication should be general and inclusive of all Syrians, reflecting a commitment to protecting agriculture, water resources, and food security.

The Syrian Future Movement calls upon President Ahmed al-Sharaa to lead the prayer for rain, as he is a symbol of unity and national responsibility. This would lend the prayer its symbolic and religious significance, enhance community participation in the supplication, and affirm that the country’s leadership is committed to working and believing together in the face of natural and societal challenges.

We ask God Almighty to send down rain as a mercy, a blessing, and a source of goodness upon Syria and its people, and to help those in charge of its affairs to serve the nation and its citizens.
