The Syrian Future Movement followed with interest the recent announcement, dated November 4, 2025, regarding cooperation between the Syrian Ministry of Information and Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, under the title “Combating Cybercrime and Digital Fraud.”
While the Movement appreciates any national or international effort aimed at protecting Syrian citizens from financial fraud and digital violations, it simultaneously emphasizes the need to distinguish digital protection from political censorship, and the necessity for these matters to be managed according to the standards of transparency and democratic governance, not the logic of control and domination.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the transitional phase Syria is currently experiencing necessitates building a new digital trust based on protecting citizens, not monitoring them, and on empowering them to access information, not restricting it.
Any return to tools of prohibition or restriction on the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), or systematic blocking, under any pretext, represents a regression from the spirit of freedom and openness that triumphed in the Syrian revolution after decades of media tyranny.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that developing a cybersecurity system in the new state must be achieved through:
- An independent national digital security authority, subject to parliamentary oversight (not executive control), and managed according to transparent professional standards.
- The enactment of a modern law for the protection of personal data that guarantees citizens’ privacy and prevents any political or commercial exploitation of their information.
- Genuine cooperation with major international companies through formal agreements that preserve national sovereignty and prevent dual control.
- The adoption of internet freedom as a constitutional principle of the future Syrian Republic, given its role as a cornerstone in building civil society and the digital economy.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the transition to a digital economy and a globally connected society cannot succeed with outdated methods or a mindset of fear of information, but rather with a mindset of openness, accountability, and shared responsibility between the state and society.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that protecting the digital space can only be achieved through responsible freedom and digital justice, which safeguards the citizen’s right to expression and access to knowledge, and restores Syria to its natural position as a free and forward-looking nation.
