Al-Hasakah protests

The Syrian Future Movement is closely monitoring the massive demonstrations that took place in the city of Al-Hasakah on Friday, October 2, 2026. These protests began after Friday prayers at the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque in the Ghuwayran neighborhood and proceeded to the Governorate Square in the city center, under the slogan “Friday of Asserting Sovereignty.”

The Syrian Future Movement views the participation of thousands of citizens in peaceful demonstrations—demanding the extension of the Syrian state’s sovereignty and the authority of its institutions over the entire Al-Hasakah governorate, as well as an end to the dual security and administrative arrangements—as a legitimate expression of genuine popular will and a civilized, civic voice that cannot be ignored or dismissed.

The Syrian Future Movement believes these demonstrations carry profound national significance; they transcend local demands to affirm Syria’s unity and sovereignty, while rejecting all forms of partition or institutional duality within the state.

The Syrian Future Movement notes that the demonstrators raised legitimate demands, foremost among them: ending the quota-based system for appointments and public sector jobs; adopting competence and integrity as the basis for assuming responsibilities; halting policies of exclusion targeting those associated with the revolution and qualified individuals from Arab, Kurdish, and Syriac backgrounds; and ensuring their fair participation in state institutions.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that these demands represent fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution and the law, and constitute an indispensable prerequisite for building the state of equal citizenship for which the Syrian people have struggled. The Syrian Future Movement considers the continued duality of security and administrative decision-making in Al-Hasakah—persisting more than a year after the agreement of January 29, 2026—to be a genuine obstacle to the restoration of basic services. This situation complicates citizens’ lives and keeps the governorate in a state of instability and uncertainty.

The Syrian Future Movement points out that residents of Al-Hasakah are still forced to bear additional costs and complications to access state institutions in other governorates, despite their right to complete their administrative procedures within their own governorate.

The Syrian Future Movement warns that any delay or negligence in addressing these legitimate demands—by any party—will only exacerbate tensions and threaten the civil peace that all Syrians cherish.

For its part, the Syrian Future Movement commends the role of the Syrian Internal Security Forces, who monitored the demonstrations and protected the participants, affirming their commitment to protecting and serving the citizens.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates that protecting peaceful demonstrators is an obligation of the executive authority, not a favor granted by anyone; any violation of their rights constitutes a breach of the law and the human rights for which the Syrian people have long struggled.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the demands of the people of Al-Hasakah are the demands of all Syrians—across the East, West, North, and South—who aspire to a single state, unified institutions, a unified decision-making process, and a single flag. The Syrian Future Movement considers the events in Al-Hasakah a true test of everyone’s seriousness in building a new Syria worthy of its people’s sacrifices. Any attempt by any party to obstruct or circumvent this process constitutes a betrayal of the martyrs’ blood and the hopes of millions of Syrians.

The Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  1. Immediately addressing the legitimate demands of the people of Al-Hasakah, working to end the dual administrative and security structures in the governorate, and enabling Syrian state institutions to fully assume their powers and duties without delay.
  2. Launching a serious and comprehensive national dialogue involving all components of Al-Hasakah—including political forces, civil society groups, and community leaders—to address all demands and guarantee the rights of all Syrians without discrimination.
  3. Holding accountable anyone found responsible for obstructing the integration process, manipulating appointments, or sidelining qualified individuals, and ensuring that competence and integrity serve as the sole criteria for assuming responsibilities.
  4. Launching urgent development projects in Al-Hasakah, including the reopening of closed government institutions and service offices, and improving essential services—such as electricity, water, healthcare, and education—to restore normalcy to the governorate.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its call to all Syrians—in Al-Hasakah and across all governorates—to uphold national unity, reject all forms of hate speech and incitement, and express their demands peacefully and civilly; for the new Syria can only be built through reason, dialogue, and participation, not through chaos and division.
