The Syrian Future Movement views the continued targeting of government and security headquarters in Syria—persisting from the fall of the defunct regime on December 8, 2024, to the present—as the gravest threat to national stability and a clear institutional failure to protect the new state institutions.
The Syrian Future Movement holds the transitional government fully responsible for this failure, for the unchecked recurrence of these incidents, and for the lack of proactive measures to safeguard official headquarters and vital facilities.
The Syrian Future Movement views with extreme concern the series of attacks targeting state headquarters and institutions. The most recent of these involved successive explosions that rocked the Taftanaz Military Airport in the eastern countryside of Idlib on the morning of Friday, October 2, 2026—incidents for which official authorities have yet to disclose the true causes or the extent of the resulting casualties and damage.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that this incident is not an isolated event but rather part of a worrying and escalating pattern of attacks, the most recent of which include:
- On March 6, 2025, Latakia, Tartus, and the Syrian coast witnessed armed attacks by remnants of the ousted regime against security and government headquarters, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries.
- On July 24, 2025, an explosion occurred at an ammunition depot near Maarat Misrin in the Idlib countryside, killing seven civilians and injuring over 100 others. At the time, the Syrian Future Movement issued a statement titled “The Maarat Misrin Explosion and the Need to Reset the Relationship Between Arms and Society” (dated July 25, 2025), holding military and civilian authorities fully responsible and calling for an independent, transparent investigation.
- On December 13, 2025, an armed attack by ISIS targeted the Internal Security Command headquarters in Palmyra—where an International Coalition delegation was meeting—resulting in the deaths of American and Syrian soldiers.
- On December 31, 2025, a suicide bombing targeted a Public Security patrol in the Bab al-Qasab area of Old Aleppo, killing one security officer and injuring two others.
- On February 27, 2026, two simultaneous suicide attacks struck security headquarters in Homs (targeting the State Security and Military Intelligence headquarters), killing more than 32 security personnel and injuring others.
- On May 19, 2026, a car bomb exploded near a Ministry of Defense building in the Bab Sharqi district of Damascus, killing one soldier and injuring 23 people, most of whom were civilians.
- On July 7, 2026, two IED explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism in Damascus, resulting in one death and injuries to 36 others. The Syrian Future Movement issued a statement at the time titled “Damascus Bombings and the Protection of National Stability” (dated July 8, 2026), calling for a professional, transparent, and swift investigation, as well as the strengthening of security measures to protect vital facilities.
- On August 6, 2026, an IED explosion targeting a civilian passenger bus in Jaramana (Damascus countryside) resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to 13 others. The Syrian Future Movement issued a statement titled “Justice for the Victims of the Jaramana Bombing” (dated August 11, 2026), demanding an urgent and independent criminal investigation.
- On September 1, 2026, a vehicle loaded with ammunition exploded at the western entrance of the city of Binnish (eastern Idlib countryside), killing at least five people and injuring others. The Syrian Future Movement issued a statement titled “The Binnish Tragedy” (dated September 2, 2026), asserting that “this recurrence warns of a serious flaw in the management and security of the transport and storage of explosive materials and ammunition.”
The Syrian Future Movement maintains that the recurrence of these incidents over the course of more than a year demonstrates the transitional government’s failure to fulfill its fundamental duty to protect state institutions and official headquarters. The Syrian Future Movement considers the continued targeting of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Tourism, internal security headquarters, and military airfields—without the implementation of proactive security measures—to be a tacit admission of failure, placing the lives of employees and civilians in daily jeopardy.
The Syrian Future Movement further calls upon the transitional government to clearly acknowledge its failure to protect these facilities—rather than merely issuing statements of condemnation that yield no tangible results—and to launch urgent, transparent investigations, announcing the findings to the public without delay.
Acting upon its national responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement makes the following recommendations:
- Seeking assistance from friendly regional nations: Given that the transitional government has demonstrated weakness in securing government facilities, it has the right—and indeed the duty—to request technical and security support from friendly regional states (such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan) to build specialized security capabilities for protecting vital infrastructure, mirroring the cooperation already established in the energy and defense sectors.
- Conducting urgent, independent investigations: This should be achieved by forming an independent national inquiry committee that includes international experts to determine the circumstances surrounding each of the aforementioned incidents, establish individual accountability, hold those involved answerable, and announce the findings with full transparency.
- Developing a comprehensive national strategy for protecting vital infrastructure: This strategy should encompass bolstering security at government and military facilities, upgrading early warning systems, training security personnel, and exchanging intelligence with friendly nations.
- Compensating the victims of these attacks and their families; the Syrian Future Movement holds the government responsible for compensating victims of attacks on government facilities—whether civilian or military—providing medical and psychological care to the wounded, and supporting the families of the deceased.
- Clearly declaring the government’s failure and holding officials accountable; we emphasize that acknowledging failure is the first step toward rectifying it. We stress the necessity for the transitional government to admit its failure to protect these facilities, to hold those responsible for this failure accountable, and to prosecute them in accordance with the law.
The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its condemnation of all attacks targeting state institutions and expresses its solidarity with the victims and their families.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that protecting state institutions is primarily the government’s responsibility, and that any failure to fulfill this duty… It is a failure vis-à-vis the Syrian people, who expect their new authority to protect them rather than leave them vulnerable to repeated targeting.
