The Syrian Future Movement joins the international community and the United Nations in commemorating World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, which this year carries a theme focusing on land sustainability and ensuring the future of generations. This theme highlights the environmental, economic, and social dangers threatening our planet, particularly in our Arab region and Syria specifically.
The Syrian Future Movement, recognizing the magnitude of this environmental and humanitarian responsibility, wishes to emphasize the following facts and positions:
The Syrian Future Movement believes that desertification and land degradation in Syria are no longer merely an ordinary environmental crisis, but have become a genuine threat to the food and water security of our people. This is a consequence of years of conflict, the destruction of vegetation cover, the indiscriminate felling of trees, and the absence of sustainable development policies.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that environmental recovery cannot be separated from political stability. Revitalizing degraded Syrian lands and combating drought requires a secure national environment and effective institutions capable of enforcing strict environmental laws and protecting limited water resources.
The Syrian Future Movement calls upon international and partner organizations, particularly the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to increase their support for sustainable projects within Syria and to assist farmers in adopting modern irrigation technologies to combat recurring droughts.
The Syrian Future Movement reaffirms its commitment to placing environmental and sustainable development issues at the forefront of its political and economic programs, based on its belief that the resilience of Syrian citizens on their land is inextricably linked to the land’s capacity for productivity and renewal.
