Security Council session on Syria

The Syrian Future Movement is following with great interest the proceedings of the UN Security Council session on the situation in Syria, held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Sunday, June 21, 2026, and Monday, June 22, 2026. The session witnessed a remarkable international consensus in support of Syria’s stability, reaffirmation of the transitional justice process, and explicit condemnation of the ongoing Israeli attacks on Syrian territory. There were also clear Arab and international calls to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and to intensify reconstruction efforts.

The Syrian Future Movement appreciates the clear Syrian position at the session, as articulated by Syria’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Ibrahim Alabi, who emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the transitional justice process.

Ambassador Alabi presented a clear picture of Syria’s commitment to uncovering the fate of the missing and forcibly disappeared, noting that the number of detainees from the former regime reached approximately six thousand, including dozens of high-ranking officers. He also affirmed Syria’s commitment to equal citizenship by completing the naturalization process for Syrian Kurds covered by Decree No. 13.

We see in these statements a clear message that the new Syria is determined to turn the page on the past and build a state of law and institutions. This aligns with our unwavering vision of the necessity of achieving transitional justice and holding accountable all those involved in violations against the Syrian people.

The Syrian Future Movement commends the Arab and international positions supporting Syria, foremost among them the Saudi call to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and the condemnation of Israeli attacks.

The Syrian Future Movement has long advocated for the removal of Syria’s name from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, on which it was placed decades ago due to the ousted regime. The continued existence of this designation constitutes a major obstacle to economic recovery and reconstruction efforts.

The Syrian Future Movement highly values this explicit Saudi call, which reflects a qualitative shift in the Arab and international stance after the fall of Assad and translates political support into practical steps that serve the interests of the Syrian people. The Syrian Future Movement also commends the Saudi representative’s condemnation, on behalf of the Arab Group, in the strongest terms of the Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, considering them a blatant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and a threat to the region’s security.

We see this unified Arab condemnation as a powerful message to the Israeli occupation that the region will not accept the continuation of its aggression.

The Syrian Future Movement recalls the support of the United Nations and the international community for Syria’s efforts, with a focus on transitional justice, combating terrorism, and the return of displaced persons.

The Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations, Claudio Cordone, affirmed that the organization supports the Syrian government’s efforts to achieve transitional justice, address the past swiftly, and hold those responsible for crimes accountable.

He also welcomed the government’s efforts in combating terrorism, noting the ongoing cooperation with regional partners.

Cordone stressed the importance of continuing to implement the integration agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), warning that calls for secession in Suwaida threaten Syrian unity.

We see these statements as international confirmation that the path to a new Syria is under UN auspices and that the international community recognizes the importance of supporting stability and national unity. The Syrian Future Movement expresses cautious optimism and offers a set of recommendations to ensure that international support translates into tangible results.

While we appreciate this international momentum, we reiterate that significant challenges remain, and that political support needs to be translated into concrete action on the ground.

Based on this responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  • Working to translate international calls to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism into concrete decisions, and pressuring the US administration to take this step, similar to the repeal of the Caesar Act, thus opening the door to investment and the return of international companies.
  • Intensifying international pressure to stop Israeli aggression by activating the role of the Security Council and issuing resolutions that obligate Israel to withdraw immediately and unconditionally from the occupied Syrian territories and to abide by the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
  • Strengthening coordination between the Syrian government, UN organizations, and donor countries to secure sufficient funding for the humanitarian response plan, reconstruction, and the realization of the vision of a “Syria without camps.”
  • Continuing the path of transitional justice and national reconciliation, while ensuring the participation of civil society in this process, echoing Cordone’s emphasis that the United Nations is working with the government and civil society to combat hate speech.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms its welcome of the international consensus in support of Syria and highly values the positions of its brotherly Arab states, foremost among them Saudi Arabia, which called for Syria’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and condemned Israeli attacks.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates that this support is a result of the Syrian government’s efforts to consolidate stability, but true success requires translating this momentum into practical steps that serve the Syrian people, strengthen state sovereignty, and contribute to building a new Syria worthy of its people’s sacrifices.

The Syrian Future Movement will remain supportive, critical, and vigilant in this process, striving to build a new Syria on the foundations of sovereignty, dignity, and sustainable development.
