International Widows’ Day

Every year on June 23rd, the international community observes International Widows’ Day, an official occasion unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness of the economic, legal, and social challenges faced by widows and their children, particularly in conflict zones.

This year, as Syria undergoes its historic transition following the fall of the regime, this day places the issue of justice, protection, and empowerment for Syrian women who have lost their husbands at the forefront of the requirements for recovery and building a free and stable Syria.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that Syrian widows were not merely victims of war, but rather true pillars of resilience and heroes on the back lines of society. They single-handedly bore the burden of managing, protecting, and supporting entire families amidst displacement camps and the harsh realities of refuge and poverty. Through their patience and sacrifices, they prevented the disintegration of the national family structure.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the gravity of the updated 2026 statistics issued by Syrian and international human rights organizations, which document the existence of more than 400,000 widows in Syria as a result of the years of protracted conflict. The vast majority of these women (approximately 80%) face the specter of extreme poverty and a lack of stable income, making their support and empowerment a pressing national duty that cannot be postponed.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that depriving widows and their children of their legal rights, whether in registering official death certificates for their husbands (especially victims of enforced disappearance and massacres), or in obtaining their legitimate and constitutional rights to inheritance and property ownership, represents a serious form of marginalization and exclusion. This necessitates a revolutionary overhaul of the legal and judicial system during the transitional phase to facilitate their access to their rights efficiently and swiftly.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the dignity of Syrian widows is preserved through “empowerment and productivity, not emergency support.” The pillars of economic and social recovery in our country will not be complete unless widows are transformed from recipients of meager aid into active and financially independent members of society. This can be achieved by involving them in small development projects and equipping them for the freelance market.

The Syrian Future Movement sees this day as an opportunity to renew its commitment to the widows of martyrs and detainees. It affirms that honoring their husbands’ sacrifices requires a firm political and institutional commitment from the Movement to secure their full rights and build a state of citizenship where no individual is wronged, and where no woman is left to face the hardships of life alone without state and legal support.

The Syrian Future Movement presents a set of recommendations to the institutions of the transitional phase and civil society organizations:

  1. Establishing a “Women Breadwinners’ Support and Care Fund”: We call for the establishment of a sovereign national fund, under the auspices of the transitional government, to guarantee dignified monthly stipends and comprehensive health insurance for widows and their children, as a primary social safety net.
  2. Facilitating judicial procedures and real estate documentation: Urging the Ministry of Justice during the transitional phase to establish emergency, free courts exempt from fees, to register spousal deaths, resolve inheritance disputes, and expedite the transfer of property and land ownership to widows and displaced women, thus protecting their rights from being lost.
  3. Institutionalizing training and production incubators: Directing civil society organizations and the emerging private sector to establish vocational and technical training centers dedicated to widows, while providing them with grants and low-interest, non-refundable in-kind loans to launch small entrepreneurial projects that guarantee them a sustainable and decent income.
