On International Translation Day, which falls on September 30th of each year, the world pauses to honor those who have bridged gaps between languages and cultures, and contributed to building bridges of understanding and communication between peoples. This date was chosen to commemorate Saint Jerome, one of history’s most prominent translators, who translated the Bible into Latin, thus laying the foundation for the translation profession as we know it today.
In commemorating this occasion, the Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of translation as a civilizational and humanitarian act that goes beyond conveying words, but also encompasses conveying meanings, exchanging values, and expanding horizons of knowledge. Translation has been and continues to be a central tool in the renaissance of nations, promoting cultural pluralism, openness to others, and consolidating the concepts of dialogue and tolerance.
In light of the profound transformations Syria is undergoing, the Syrian Future Movement believes that translation is a fundamental pillar in building a new Syria—a Syria open to the world, reconciled with itself, and based on its diverse cultural heritage. A Syria that upholds freedom of thought, celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity, and believes that knowledge is a right for all. A Syria that places translation at the heart of its educational and cultural project, supports translators and relevant institutions, and includes translation among its national priorities.
We, in the Syrian Future Movement, call for:
The launch of a national translation strategy that includes support for translators, the development of specialized educational programs, and the establishment of research centers focused on translation and cultural communication.
Strengthening the presence of the Arabic language in international forums by translating Syrian productions into world languages and transferring global knowledge into Arabic.
Consolidating the culture of translation in Syrian society as a tool for renaissance, openness, and renewal.
On this day, we salute every translator, male and female, and appreciate their efforts in serving truth and knowledge. We affirm that the new Syria will only be built on the foundations of pluralism, openness, and mutual respect—the very values that translation embodies at its core.
