The Syrian Future Movement reviewed a photo sent to it from the heart of Damascus, showing veiled women standing at the door of a security branch for an unknown reason, while masked security personnel stand at the entrance to the building, completely concealing their faces.
This photo raises legitimate questions about the nature of the changes supposedly characterizing the new phase in Syria. The presence of security personnel with their faces hidden from citizens, especially women, is not reassuring. Rather, it fosters fear and suspicion, and suggests a lack of transparency and accountability.
The Syrian Future Movement reminds us that security personnel are sons of the nation, servants and guardians of its sons and daughters. It is their duty to appear clearly with their identity before the people, not to hide it behind a veil that raises suspicion and fuels societal tension.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the new phase Syria is experiencing after liberation requires strengthening trust between the state and society, not reproducing the images of fear and terror experienced by Syrians under the former regime.
We, in the Syrian Future Movement, call on the Ministry of Interior and relevant security institutions to establish clear standards that preserve the prestige of these institutions, on the one hand, and the dignity and sense of security of citizens, on the other. Such standards require that the identity of security personnel be concealed under normal circumstances, except in special circumstances justified by the requirements of security work.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that building a new state in Syria cannot be achieved by repeating old practices that have entrenched the estrangement between citizens and state institutions. Rather, it can be achieved through transparency, accountability, and demonstrating that security personnel are, first and foremost, guardians of national dignity before being guardians of the gates of various security branches.
