World Space Week

October 4th marks the beginning of World Space Week, the largest annual global event established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 through Resolution 54/68.

This date commemorates the launch of the first human-made satellite, Sputnik 1, on October 4, 1957—a milestone that opened new scientific horizons for humanity—followed by the signing of the Outer Space Treaty, which governs the peaceful use of space, on October 10, 1967.

The week aims to raise awareness about the role of science and technology in improving human life. This year, it is held under the theme “Living in Space,” highlighting the future of sustainable human presence and the knowledge-related challenges that lie ahead.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that celebrating advancements in space science is a compelling call to break away from the legacies of ignorance and stagnation. It urges a serious shift toward building a modern Syrian civil society that adopts scientific, critical, and knowledge-based thinking as the fundamental pillars of its civilizational renaissance.

The Syrian Future Movement views space exploration as the ultimate expression of human cooperation that transcends borders and conflicts—precisely what Syria needs today to consolidate the values of inclusive citizenship and to work collectively toward building a state governed by institutions and the rule of law, with a shared vision for the future.

The Syrian Future Movement regards modern science and technology as essential tools for intellectual and practical liberation, as well as indispensable means for achieving sustainable development, embracing modernity, and rebuilding the nation upon advanced scientific foundations that fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people. The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the national responsibility to nurture young Syrian minds and talents, and to provide a stable educational, political, and social environment that stems the tide of emigration and invests in their potential—recognizing them as the true strategic asset for building the new state.

The Syrian Future Movement calls upon all educational institutions, civil society organizations, and cultural entities in Syria to draw inspiration from this occasion to foster knowledge and awareness among youth and children, encourage innovation, and broaden their horizons, ensuring that Syria remains—as it has been throughout history—a beacon of knowledge and a shaper of human civilization.
