International Day of Parliamentarism

The Syrian Future Movement affirms the historical and political significance of the International Day of Parliamentarism, established by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 72/278 of May 22, 2018, to be celebrated annually on June 30, the anniversary of the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1889.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that this day represents a global symbol for consolidating the values of good governance, transparency, legislative accountability, and representing the will of free peoples in drafting the laws that govern their fundamental lives, and embodying political pluralism as a cornerstone for preventing tyranny.

The Syrian Future Movement bases its position on recent international parliamentary reports, particularly the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s 2024 report and its updated reports up to 2026, which indicate that parliaments in emerging countries contribute over 65% to reducing corruption indicators, achieving civil stability, and localizing the Sustainable Development Goals. This makes effective parliamentary work an imperative, not a political luxury.

The Syrian Future Movement presents an accurate picture of the current reality in Syria, where the country is undergoing a sensitive and critical transitional phase following the fall of the Assad regime. This necessitates a shift from the legacy of the sham, personalized “People’s Assembly” to a genuine parliament that truly represents the diverse fabric of Syrian society, encompassing its Muslim, Christian, Kurdish, Arab, and other national components.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that enshrining the values of this day represents the only legal and constitutional way to protect Syria from descending into chaos and to ensure the drafting of a new social contract that safeguards equal citizenship and provides a secure environment for reconstruction and transitional justice, guided by a comprehensive national vision and an ambitious outlook for the future.

The Syrian Future Movement recommends that all political and national forces and bodies overseeing the transitional phase must expedite the legislative process. The Syrian Future Movement makes a decisive recommendation not to delay the convening of the first session of the transitional parliament, considering that any delay in convening this session represents a threat to institutional national legitimacy and a legislative vacuum that may be exploited by those lying in wait for Syria, stressing that the first session is the cornerstone for declaring the true birth of a democratic Syria.
