On this day, May 4th, the world celebrates International Firefighters’ Day, an occasion born from the sacrifice of the Linton Forest fire in Australia in 1999. Since then, it has become a global symbol honoring those who rush into danger when everyone else backs away.
Today, amidst the complex circumstances in our beloved Syria, the Syrian Future Movement stands in awe and appreciation of these heroes who face the flames with bare chests and limited resources.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the Syrian firefighter, whether in the Civil Defense, official fire brigades, or volunteer teams, is the common thread of Syrian hope. Their actions transcend geographical and political boundaries to save lives, regardless of affiliation, making them a living example of the citizenship we strive to build in the Syria of the future.
The Syrian Future Movement expresses its deep concern regarding the statistics recorded during 2025 and early 2026, in which teams responded to more than 12,000 emergency calls amidst unprecedented logistical challenges. These challenges include a severe shortage of modern firefighting equipment, the deterioration of personal protective equipment, and significant difficulties in securing the fuel needed to operate the vehicles, placing the lives of both firefighters and civilians in grave danger.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the continued neglect of improving the living and legal conditions of firefighters constitutes a breach of national security. We demand the establishment of a “National Fund to Support Volunteers and Firefighters” to guarantee fair compensation and comprehensive healthcare for those injured in the line of duty, and to provide full support to the families of fallen firefighters.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that building a modern state begins with strengthening its service institutions. It believes that the shift towards using early warning technology and drones to monitor forests and vital infrastructure in Syria is no longer a luxury, but an absolute necessity to protect what remains of the vegetation and infrastructure, which has been devastated by years of crisis.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on international organizations and Syrian civil society to focus their support on the fire and rescue sector, keeping it free from political influence, as these services are fundamental to the right to life. We also commend the young Syrian volunteers who proved during the recent forest fires that initiative is the true engine of change.
In conclusion:
The Syrian Future Movement salutes every firefighter on duty tomorrow, staying awake so we can sleep peacefully. We pledge to remain a voice demanding your rights until every hero receives the dignity and appreciation they deserve.
