International Mother Earth Day

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that protecting the Syrian environment is a fundamental pillar of national security. Despite the abundant rainfall this year, international reports for 2025 indicate that Syria will face its driest winter in nearly seven decades, with a sharp decline in rainfall rates, reaching as low as 27% of the annual average in some areas, such as Damascus. This places the country at risk of structural drought, threatening population and food security.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the necessity of confronting the environmental devastation wrought by years of conflict. Recent statistics reveal the loss of a third of Syria’s forest cover, with more than 20,000 hectares of forests expected to burn in 2025 alone. This has resulted in massive carbon emissions and a severe disruption of the ecological balance, which will require decades to recover.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for an urgent national strategy to address water and agricultural pollution, especially given reports confirming that more than 12 million Syrians lack safe access to water, and the contamination of vast areas with war remnants and landmines, which prevent the cultivation of agricultural land and cause daily injuries among civilians.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the future lies in a “green transition” and rehabilitation. We emphasize that reconstruction must be based on “green architecture” and renewable energy to reduce reliance on polluting fossil fuels.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that environmental justice is an integral part of transitional justice. Therefore, we call upon the international community and UN organizations to support cross-border environmental projects, guarantee Syria’s equitable water share, and cooperate in removing oil pollutants and toxic waste that are harming the health of Syrian citizens.

In conclusion, the Syrian Future Movement pledges to the Syrian people that environmental issues will remain a priority in its political and service program, striving to hand down to future generations a viable homeland, green in identity and sustainable in resources.
