Honoree No. (56): Khaled Al-Issa

Introduction:

Martyr Khaled al-Issa is considered one of the most prominent figures in Syrian revolutionary media who wielded the camera as a weapon against the machinery of oppression. He documented the truth and paid for it with his life, ensuring his name remains etched in the memory of the Syrian revolution as a witness and a shaper of awareness.

Early Life and Beginnings:

Khaled al-Issa was born in the city of Kafranbel in the Idlib countryside of northwestern Syria. Since the beginning of the Syrian revolution in 2011, Kafranbel has become a global symbol through its revolutionary banners, which expressed the spirit of the Syrian people and their aspirations for a pluralistic, civil state based on citizenship and justice.

He grew up in an environment saturated with the spirit of the revolution, choosing from the very beginning to be part of this movement, not a mere spectator.

Media Work and the Role of Documentation:

He chose to remain inside Syria, refusing to leave, believing that conveying the truth from within was an urgent duty. He picked up a camera at a young age, becoming one of the first media activists in Kafranbel, and later throughout northern Syria. Khaled Al-Issa accompanied journalist Hadi Al-Abdullah on numerous field reports, especially after the latter moved to northern Syria in 2015. Together, they worked on the most dangerous front lines, documenting dozens of massacres perpetrated by regime forces and their allies, particularly the airstrikes targeting civilians in Idlib and Aleppo.

Al-Issa was not merely a reporter; he was present at the heart of the events, venturing into the most volatile areas and risking his life to present the world with an accurate picture of what was happening.

Injuries and Targeting:

Throughout his years of work, he sustained dozens of injuries due to his constant presence in areas under bombardment. Despite this, he remained undeterred, his determination to fulfill his mission only growing stronger.

On June 17, 2016, an explosive device targeted the house where he and his colleague were staying in the Al-Shaar neighborhood of Aleppo, seriously injuring them both. They were subsequently transferred to Türkiye for treatment.

While his colleague survived, Khaled al-Issa fell into a coma after sustaining a severe head injury. He struggled for his life until he was martyred on June 24, 2016.

Symbolic Significance and Martyrdom:

The martyrdom of Khaled al-Issa was not an isolated incident, but rather the continuation of a long history of targeting journalists in Syria in an attempt to obscure the truth. However, like other martyrs of the media, he contributed to solidifying the narrative of the revolution and protecting it from distortion.

He proved that a camera can be more truthful than any speech, and that an image can shake the conscience of the world, even if it remains silent.

Honoring the Syrian Future Movement:

Based on the Syrian Future Movement’s belief in the pivotal role of media in shaping awareness and confronting tyranny, we announce the posthumous honoring of the martyr Khaled al-Issa by awarding him the Movement’s symbolic shield, in recognition of his contributions and sacrifices.

This honor is a testament to the mission of free media and an affirmation that those who carried the truth and defended it will not be forgotten.

Conclusion:

Khaled al-Issa has departed physically, but his memory remains alive in the hearts of Syrians, and his image stands as a testament to one of the most painful and truthful periods in Syrian history.

His name will forever be a testament to the fact that the Syrian revolution was not merely slogans, but rather immense sacrifices made by men who were true to their covenant with God, to build a future worthy of Syria and its people.
