The Syrian Future Movement commemorates World Meteorological Day and appreciates the global efforts led by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in strengthening comprehensive Earth observation systems. Inspired by the scientific theory of Earth System Science, which links the atmosphere to the oceans, land, and human societies, the movement affirms that accurate observation today is the scientific foundation for effective forecasting and sustainable protection tomorrow.
The Syrian Future Movement recognizes the exceptional challenges facing Syria during its sensitive transitional phase, where escalating climate crises—such as persistent drought, flash floods, and severe storms—intersect with the priorities of restoring security and essential services and facilitating the safe and dignified return of refugees. In this context, strengthening meteorological capabilities becomes an urgent national necessity to support sustainable reconstruction, protect local communities, and minimize human and material losses.
The Syrian Future Movement calls for enshrining the values of this day in the Syrian national consciousness through gradual and practical steps based on:
- Developing the capabilities of the current National Meteorological Authority, enhancing its independence, and equipping it with international standards in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and other international partners.
- Establishing a medium-term national plan to improve monitoring and early warning networks and linking them to reconstruction, agricultural, and urban development plans.
- Gradually integrating fundamental concepts in climate science and environmental monitoring into educational curricula, with a focus on community awareness.
- Encouraging the participation of citizens, civil society, and farmers in collecting local data and raising awareness of the importance of early warning through local awareness campaigns and accessible digital solutions.
The Syrian Future Movement is rooted in a vision for the future of Syria, imbued with a comprehensive national and humanitarian spirit, where Syria unites all its people regardless of their affiliations, observes its present with a precise scientific eye, and protects its future with justice, solidarity, and sustainability. Building Syria is based on the principle that human beings are at the heart of all policy, science is a fundamental tool, national unity is a guarantee, and environmental and social peace is the ultimate goal.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on the transitional government, all national forces, civil society, and international partners – foremost among them the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Development Programme – to work together seriously to transform the slogan “We monitor today to protect tomorrow” into concrete national policies that build a strong, safe, sustainable, and humane Syria at the heart of the region and the world.
