Israeli aircraft sprayed unknown substances over the Quneitra countryside

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its deep concern and strong condemnation of the repeated operations carried out by Israeli aircraft, ostensibly for agricultural purposes, which sprayed unidentified substances over various areas in the southern Quneitra countryside for the second consecutive day (January 26-27, 2026). This constitutes a blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and a direct threat to the safety of civilians and agricultural lands.

The Syrian Future Movement views this incident, confirmed by credible media reports and the Quneitra Governorate’s Directorate of Agriculture, as a dangerous escalation within the context of ongoing Israeli violations of Syrian territory, particularly in the southern border regions. This exposes farmers and residents to unknown health and environmental risks and raises legitimate concerns about its impact on the soil, vegetation, livestock, and public health, including that of children and women.

The Future Movement commends the swift measures taken by the Quneitra Agriculture Directorate, in cooperation with the Environment Directorate, in issuing an urgent health warning to residents and farmers to avoid approaching the affected areas or handling plants or animal feed until the laboratory analysis results are released. They have also begun collecting plant samples from several locations for testing and assessing potential damage.

We believe these steps are essential to provide immediate protection and to uncover the nature of these substances and their intended use.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on the interim government and relevant authorities to take immediate and practical measures to address this threat and proposes the following recommendations:

  1. Forming a joint national investigation committee comprised of experts from the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Environment, and Defense, as well as civil society organizations and representatives of the residents of rural Quneitra, to document the incident, monitor the laboratory analysis results, and submit a transparent report to the Syrian and international public.
  2. Strengthening monitoring and surveillance in the southern border regions by deploying joint field teams to collect daily data on any suspicious flights or activity, in coordination with neutral international organizations to document violations.
  3. Providing immediate support to affected farmers through temporary compensation, supplying alternative feed and seeds, and offering free health screening programs for residents in neighboring areas to alleviate the economic and health burdens resulting from these operations.
  4. Submitting a formal complaint to the United Nations and the Security Council, supported by photographic evidence and technical reports, to condemn these violations and request an independent international investigation, with a focus on protecting civilians and agricultural lands under the ceasefire agreements.
  5. Raising public awareness through national media campaigns that explain the potential risks and call for adherence to official warnings, linking this incident to efforts to build peaceful coexistence and stability in the southern regions.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates that any threat to Syrian sovereignty or the safety of its citizens must be confronted with comprehensive national unity, far removed from polarization, while upholding the Syrian people’s right to live in safety and dignity on their land.

Protecting agricultural lands and public health is an integral part of building a strong and cohesive new Syrian state.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on the international community to assume its responsibilities in preventing the recurrence of such violations and ensuring respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
