International Human Rights Day

The Syrian Future Movement celebrates International Human Rights Day today, December 10th, the day the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The Syrian Future Movement views this day as a global reminder of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and an opportunity to reaffirm the national commitment to protecting these rights in the new Syria.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that protecting human rights is the foundation for rebuilding modern Syrian state institutions and establishing good governance based on law, justice, and equality. Respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens, regardless of sect, affiliation, or region, is an indispensable condition for any successful transition.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that strengthening the rule of law and independent judicial institutions, and monitoring citizens’ rights at all stages of reconstruction, is the best way to ensure the sustainability of rights and freedoms in Syria. Transitional justice and accountability for past violations also constitute a solid foundation for building a modern, just, and transparent state.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on the international community, including the United Nations, to support Syria’s efforts to protect human rights without interfering in its national sovereignty, and to work alongside national stakeholders to build strong and effective institutions.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that commemorating this day must translate into practical action on the ground through:

Developing legal and human rights education in schools and universities.

Promoting a culture of civil, political, and social rights among all Syrians.

Ensuring the effective participation of civil society in monitoring human rights and promoting accountability.

In conclusion, the Syrian Future Movement believes that protecting human rights is not merely an annual occasion, but rather the cornerstone of any future national vision and the starting point for rebuilding Syria as a state of law and institutions, a state of justice and genuine citizenship, a state of progress and prosperity for all Syrians.
