Events in Latakia on November 25, 2025

The Syrian Future Movement is following with great concern the developments that took place in the city of Latakia and some areas of the Syrian coast on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, where demonstrations erupted in response to a call issued by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the so-called “Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and Abroad.”

The Ministry of Interior confirmed in an official statement issued that same evening that security forces were fired upon from within a residential neighborhood, resulting in injuries to two of its members and a number of civilians, in addition to acts of vandalism targeting public and private property. The Ministry announced that it would pursue the perpetrators and the criminal cells involved, while fully committing to protecting the right to peaceful protest.

The Syrian Future Movement, recognizing the profound historical transformation that Syria is undergoing in its transitional phase following the fall of the despotic regime, believes that these events simultaneously embody the manifestations of the inherited crisis and the possibilities for overcoming it towards a state of citizenship and the rule of law.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the following principles:

  1. The rule of law is a non-negotiable principle. Anyone who committed a crime under the former regime or who commits an attack today against public security or property must be brought before an independent judiciary without sectarian or regional reprisals.
  2. The right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed to every Syrian citizen in any region of the country, and it is the duty of the transitional government to provide full protection for this right.
  3. Expanded administrative decentralization, or what we in the Syrian Future Movement have proposed as service decentralization, has become a national necessity to guarantee Syria’s unity and stability amidst its cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity, and it must be a priority in the ongoing national dialogue.
  4. No successful, strong, civil state can be built in the presence of uncontrolled weapons. Therefore, the transitional government must take decisive and immediate measures to disarm all illegal weapons in all areas without exception.

The Syrian Future Movement demands the following from the transitional government:

  • Open a transparent and independent judicial investigation into the events in Latakia, the results of which must be announced within a specified timeframe.
  • Immediately release all those detained for peacefully exercising their right to protest.
  • Accelerating the convening of a comprehensive national dialogue table on the form of the state and administrative decentralization, with the participation of genuine representatives from all Syrian communities.
  • Developing an urgent national plan to control weapons and dismantle all armed groups not under the authority of the state.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that a new Syria will only be built through a collective will that transcends the wounds of the past and draws a clear line between the era of tyranny and the era of equal citizenship. It is our duty today, as citizens and institutions, to transform legitimate anger into constructive energy, accumulated fear into mutual trust, and Syrian diversity from a source of anxiety into a source of strength.

The Syrian Future Movement reaffirms its full commitment to working for a unified, pluralistic, and strong Syria that is inclusive and leaves no one behind.
