Raising foreign flags on civilian institutions in northern Syria

The Syrian Future Movement followed what the Afrin Media Center published on Saturday, October 25, 2025, regarding a clip showing the Al-Rowwad women’s volleyball team training inside a sports hall in Afrin, with the Turkish flag raised in the hall.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the regions of northern Syria, including Afrin, have witnessed complex interventions and effective support from Turkey for revolutionary factions and the leadership of the National Army for years, which has contributed to the protection of civilians and the security of institutions after their liberation from the conflict. It appreciates this positive role, while emphasizing the need to respect the sovereignty of the Syrian state and its national symbols.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that civil, sports, and cultural institutions in northern Syria must clearly reflect the Syrian national identity, strengthening citizens’ sense of belonging to the homeland and ensuring respect for its sovereignty. Therefore, raising any foreign flag in these institutions, even given the current security and political conditions, poses a symbolic problem that requires wise and balanced handling.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of balancing the region’s historical and field realities with regional relations, in a way that preserves stability and enhances cooperation with supporting regional actors, while adhering to the symbols of the Syrian state in all civil institutions.

The Syrian Future Movement recommends strengthening Syrian national symbolism in all civil, sports, and cultural institutions in northern Syria. It also calls for the separation of foreign symbols from these institutions, taking into account the security and field situation. It also calls for supporting community dialogue with residents and local factions to ensure that the symbols raised are consistent with national affiliation, while continuing constructive coordination with regional actors to ensure stability and respect for the sovereignty of the Syrian state.

The Syrian Future Movement places national sovereignty and Syrian identity at the forefront of its priorities and emphasizes that all our civil and cultural institutions must reflect national affiliation, while respecting the reality on the ground and the supporting actors who have contributed to protecting northern Syria.

We, at the Syrian Future Movement, hope that this initiative will provide an opportunity to strengthen national unity, a shared Syrian identity, and stability in northern Syria.
