The Syrian Future Movement has reviewed media reports published on October 16, 2025, regarding the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ (OPCW) decision to “expedite the closure of the Syrian file,” issued following the meetings of the organization’s 110th Executive Council. The decision included steps to expedite the process of destroying Syria’s remaining chemical weapons stockpiles and completing verification and documentation.
While the Syrian Future Movement welcomes any international effort aimed at closing the chapter on internationally prohibited weapons, it emphasizes that closing this file should not mean closing the chapter on justice or forgetting. Rather, it must constitute a step toward accountability and national reconciliation based on truth and transparency.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the Syrian chemical file cannot be separated from the system of violations committed against the Syrian people over the past decades. True justice requires uncovering the full facts and determining responsibilities, both at the political and military levels, to ensure that such crimes are not repeated in the future.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to ensure the continuation of its monitoring and documentation programs and to provide technical support to the transitional government, paving the way for the establishment of independent national institutions capable of managing this issue professionally and transparently, in line with the principles of the 2025 Constitutional Declaration, which affirmed the state’s commitment to international treaties and agreements and the protection of citizens’ lives and dignity.
At the end of its statement, the Syrian Future Movement affirms that the new Syria, to which its people aspire, is a state of law, justice, and accountability, in which there is no place for the use of force against the people or for the whitewashing of crimes under the guise of political settlements. Therefore, the closure of the chemical weapons file must herald the beginning of a new era of justice and responsible national sovereignty.
