The case of lawyer Malik Al-Jiush

The Syrian Future Movement is following with deep concern the arrest of Syrian lawyer Malek Mahmoud al-Jiyoush, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Syriatel, who was detained in early September 2025 by government agencies without a judicial warrant or official announcement of his whereabouts or the charges against him.

While we, the Syrian Future Movement, express our full support for the statement of the Syrian Network for Human Rights regarding the case of lawyer Malek al-Jiyoush, we affirm that what happened represents a flagrant violation of the most basic standards of justice and a blatant infringement of civil and political rights guaranteed by international law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Syria has ratified.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the arbitrary arrest of lawyer al-Jiyoush:

  • Undermines confidence in judicial institutions.
  • Enforces the logic of the security state at the expense of the rule of law.
  • Threatens the safety of citizens and deepens the climate of fear and lack of transparency.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that lawyers, as defenders of justice, must enjoy legal immunity and job security, not be targeted for their positions, opinions, or professional affiliations.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on the Syrian authorities to:

  1. Immediately reveal the whereabouts of lawyer Malek al-Jiyush and the circumstances of his detention.
  2. Guarantee his physical and psychological safety and enable him to communicate with his family and lawyer.
  3. Bring him to a fair and public trial, or release him immediately unless clear legal charges are brought against him.
  4. Open an independent judicial investigation to hold accountable those involved in his unlawful detention, and provide financial and moral compensation to the victim and his family if the violation is proven.

We believe that a new Syria will not be built through arbitrary arrests, but rather through justice, accountability, and respect for human dignity.
We call on all national and civil forces to stand united in the face of these violations and work for a state of law and institutions.
