Events in Al-Sumaria neighborhood in Damascus

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its deep concern over the events taking place in the Al-Sumaria neighborhood of Damascus, and media reports about a two-day deadline for residents to evacuate their homes, under the pretext that most of them are Alawites and remnants of the former regime. We believe this incident comes at a suspicious time, potentially increasing public anger at the leadership of the transitional phase.

Based on our belief that national unity and civil peace are the foundations of building a new Syria, the Syrian Future Movement affirms that protecting the dignity of the population is the responsibility of the transitional government. Accordingly, we call for an end to any measures that lead to the displacement of residents from their homes without a well-thought-out plan that respects their dignity and their basic rights to housing and safety. We believe that any reorganization or census must be conducted transparently and fairly, while ensuring that residents remain in their homes and that their property is protected, especially for the poor and unarmed civilians who have not been proven to have committed a crime or violation.

The Syrian Future Movement stresses the need to distinguish between fugitive senior officers implicated in crimes against the Syrian people and the rest of the residents of the Al-Sumaria neighborhood, the majority of whom are poor civilians suffering from the brunt of war and crises. We believe that security efforts should focus on prosecuting those responsible for these crimes, far from collective punishments targeting innocent and impoverished people.

The Syrian Future Movement condemns any attempts to transform the Al-Sumaria issue into a sectarian conflict that threatens the Syrian social fabric. Syria belongs to all its people, regardless of their affiliations. We reject any rhetoric or practices that sow division among Syrians and call for a comprehensive dialogue that includes representatives of the neighborhood and the authorities to reach just solutions that preserve the rights of all.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of addressing the Al-Sumaria issue peacefully, respecting the law and ensuring the stability of the neighborhood. We believe that any administrative or security measures must be based on principles of justice, with the involvement of local community leaders and residents in formulating solutions to ensure transparency and popular acceptance.

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its full solidarity with the poor and innocent residents of the Al-Sumaria neighborhood, and we affirm our support for their right to a dignified life in their homes. The new Syria we seek is a Syria of citizenship, where everyone is equal before the law and every citizen’s right to security and dignity is respected.

The Syrian Future Movement renews its commitment to working for a unified, just, and prosperous Syria and calls on all Syrians to join forces to overcome these challenges in a spirit of unity and solidarity.

We must work together to build a homeland that accommodates everyone, to stop the bleeding of divisions, the fueling of resentment, and the creation of an atmosphere of tension.
