The Syrian Future Movement views with great appreciation the Iraqi government’s announcement on April 25, 2025, of its decision to provide 220,000 tons of wheat as a gift to support the Syrian people amid the ongoing economic challenges in the region. The first shipments began entering Syria through the Al-Bukamal border crossing on April 26, 2025, with 55 trucks loaded with wheat arriving in Deir ez-Zor province. The wheat is expected to be distributed according to a carefully devised plan to ensure it reaches the areas most in need.
The Syrian Future Movement sees this initiative as a continuation of the strong economic and trade relations between Syria and Iraq. Historically, Iraq has played a pivotal role in enhancing regional food security through trade exchanges, particularly in essential commodities like grains. This direct support reflects Iraq’s recognition of the economic crisis Syria is facing and highlights the importance of cooperation in stabilizing local markets.
On a strategic level, the Syrian Future Movement considers this step a clear indication of the political and economic direction toward deeper integration between the two countries, aiming to reduce dependence on external markets. Such cooperation contributes to achieving greater economic independence for both sides and serves as a successful model for the management of shared resources, benefiting both peoples and promoting sustainable development.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that this gift is not merely a shipment of foodstuffs but a profound economic and political message that underscores the depth of ties between Syria and Iraq. It paves the way for further cooperation in trade, investment, and infrastructure, reinforcing regional stability and creating a more resilient economic environment capable of withstanding global changes.
