Graduating European Economic Sanctions on Syria

The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the decision of the European Union foreign ministers on Monday, 2025-01-27, during their meeting in the Belgian capital, Brussels, to gradually suspend economic sanctions imposed on Syria for one year.

The Syrian Future Movement considers this effort the result of the struggle of Syrians both inside and outside Syria, emphasizing that the success of this phase is a shared responsibility.

The Syrian Future Movement views this step as historic on the part of the European Union and a sign of European solidarity with the Syrian people.

The Syrian Future Movement attaches great importance to the statements of the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, who said, “If the new leadership in Syria takes steps, the European Union will also take steps.”

The Syrian Future Movement believes the next phase is a critical responsibility for Syria’s administration, requiring the successful inclusion of all groups in a transitional process that should lead to the birth of a new constitution and fair elections, with an emphasis on respecting women’s rights.

The Syrian Future Movement sees the suspension of restrictions on aviation, shipping, banking infrastructure, and energy for one year as paving the way for economic recovery, enhancing stability in Syria, improving access to essential services, and contributing to long-term stability in the region.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the Syrian people can rebuild the nation and its citizens, provided that all remaining sanctions, originally intended to protect the Syrian people from the brutality of the defunct Assad regime, are lifted.

The Syrian Future Movement warns against the economic sanctions becoming a factor that violates the Syrian people’s right to a dignified life in their homeland and cautions that these sanctions could yield negative results.

The Syrian Future Movement pledges to stand with all its capacity and influence alongside Syrian forces to re-empower the Syrian people and restore their rightful position.
