On the anniversary of the October 1973 War

Today, Tuesday, October 6, marks the anniversary of the October War of 1973—an occasion that the Assad regime (under both the father and the son) sought to monopolize for decades, transforming it from a moment of Syrian sacrifice and valor into a tool to legitimize one-man rule and entrench authoritarianism.

On this historic occasion, the Syrian Future Movement—born of the blessed Syrian Revolution—presents its independent national perspective based on the following principles:

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the blood and heroism of the free soldiers and officers among our people who were martyred on the Golan fronts constitute a purely national legacy belonging solely to Syrians; under no circumstances can these sincere sacrifices be co-opted to serve a regime that subsequently harnessed the nation’s resources to protect its own grip on power and destroy its cities.

The Syrian Future Movement holds that Hafez al-Assad politically exploited the October War as a vehicle to construct a false military legitimacy following his coup against his own comrades-in-arms, transforming the army from a national institution dedicated to defending borders and sovereignty into an ideological instrument for protecting the regime and suppressing the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom and dignity.

The Syrian Future Movement considers that the true liberation we seek today can only be achieved by freeing the Syrian individual from the yoke of tyranny and corruption, ending the legacy of the “War of Movement” (which held Syrian national decision-making hostage for decades), and embarking on the construction of a modern civil state founded on the peaceful transfer of power and equal citizenship. The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that truly commemorating the events of October requires working to reclaim Syria’s independent decision-making from the foreign occupations and tutelage brought about by the younger Assad’s regime to suppress the people’s revolution. It also calls for building a professional national army with a defensive doctrine dedicated to protecting the constitution and borders, rather than besieging Syrian cities.

The Syrian Future Movement calls upon all revolutionary and civil forces to spread historical and civic awareness and to dismantle the regime’s misleading narratives. This is essential to rewriting contemporary Syrian history through the hands of its loyal citizens, in a manner that serves the Syrian people’s aspirations for comprehensive political change and the construction of a stable, democratic future.

Mercy to the righteous martyrs of the Golan and the martyrs of the Syrian Revolution; long live a free, civil, and proud Syria.
