This date commemorates the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924.
This occasion aims to celebrate this paramount game of human intelligence and to emphasize its historical and developmental roles in fostering intercultural dialogue, stimulating critical and strategic thinking, and building channels of peaceful communication between peoples, thus serving international peace and security.
On the occasion of International Chess Day, and at a time when our country needs to move from haphazard crisis management to sound national planning, the Syrian Future Movement presents this statement as a formulation of a strategic vision with a philosophical dimension. This vision views the culture of chess as an essential intellectual and civilizational approach for building a stable future for Syria.
The Syrian Future Movement views the game of chess as a profound philosophical embodiment of societal building and the integration of roles. A chessboard cannot function with a single piece, and victory is only achieved through the harmony of all, from pawns to the king. The Syrian Future Movement applies this principle to the structure of Syrian society during the transitional phase, which necessitates the cooperation of all national components without marginalization or exclusion, based on the principles of the social contract and equal opportunity.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that moving towards the future requires abandoning a mindset of “immediate reactions” and adopting “strategic, proactive thinking.” This is supported by recent governance reports demonstrating that the absence of proactive visions delays the recovery of emerging nations from conflict. Current data for 2026 indicates that countries that do not base their decisions on accurate calculations of future situations face a high risk of instability reversals. Therefore, scientific planning is the primary lifeline for our country to avoid chaos or improvisation.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the necessity of instilling the philosophy of “critical thinking” in emerging generations and youth, in line with UNESCO reports that confirm a severe crisis in the quality and relevance of education in crisis environments. These reports indicate that the education gap for young people in these areas reaches approximately 70%, leaving them lacking quality education and basic problem-solving skills.
We also view teaching planning skills as a major tool for intellectual and developmental fortification, protecting Syria’s young population, enhancing its capacity for leadership and productivity, and filling the knowledge void exploited by extremist networks.
The Syrian Future Movement links its national vision to the international system through a civilizational, values-based, and ethical approach. It believes that the arena of international politics should be governed by international laws and charters, not by the logic of hegemony or the sacrifice of fragile states for the interests of powerful nations. This aligns with the “normative theory of international relations,” which views peace as a just and participatory process based on respect for the sovereignty of peoples and their right to self-determination, free from the conflicts of competing axes.
The Syrian Future Movement is committed to actively contributing to creating a suitable developmental and social environment for political transition, using accessible and understandable language that addresses citizens’ daily concerns. It believes that regaining the initiative and building robust institutions depend primarily on placing “the right person in the right place” within the state structure, just as the philosophy of chess dictates that each piece be moved according to its function and capabilities to ensure the cohesion and protection of the national front.
