The resolution of the Al-Suqaylabiyah conflict in the Hama countryside

The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the swift and professional response of the Internal Security Forces in Hama Governorate, led by Brigadier General Mulham Shantout, to the incident that occurred in the city of Al-Suqaylabiyah in the western Hama countryside on the evening of Friday, March 27, 2026. Security units intervened immediately after a fight broke out between a number of young men from Al-Suqaylabiyah and Qalaat al-Madiq, and were able to contain the tension, which had escalated into minor riots that included material damage to some shops and property. Six individuals initially involved were arrested.

The Syrian Future Movement respects the conciliatory efforts that resulted from a meeting that included bishops, religious figures, and dignitaries from the Al-Ghab region. At this meeting, the head of Internal Security announced on Saturday, March 28, 2026, that a peaceful and consensual solution had been reached. This solution included the release of a number of detainees whose direct involvement was not proven, while the main instigator remained in custody and the investigation continued according to legal procedures, with the aim of strengthening social stability and preserving civil peace.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the swift security intervention and the responsible national role of community leaders and religious figures contributed to preventing the incident from escalating into wider tensions. This aligns with the widespread stance of social media activists, who vehemently rejected any attempts to politicize the incident or give it a sectarian character, and called for the firm application of the law to all, while safeguarding the unity of the social fabric during this sensitive transitional phase.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that such isolated incidents, however limited, reveal the urgent need to strengthen trust between citizens and security and judicial institutions, and to establish effective mechanisms for addressing local tensions before they are exploited. The resulting reconciliation serves as a positive model, reflecting the Syrian people’s ability to overcome differences through dialogue and the rule of law.

Based on its comprehensive national vision and forward-looking perspective for building a unified Syria, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  • Forming joint local committees comprising internal security forces, community leaders, and civil society representatives in the areas of Al-Suqaylabiyah, Al-Ghab, and Qalaat al-Madiq to assess damages and provide fair and swift compensation to those affected, and to develop joint awareness and development programs to strengthen social cohesion and prevent recurrence.
  • Ensuring the transparency of investigations and trials, with the results made public, as part of implementing the principles of transitional justice in a neutral and professional manner, thus building trust in the new state institutions.
  • Calling on all political and social forces to reject the exploitation of any isolated incident to incite divisions or strife, and to focus on building a state based on equal citizenship, drawing on the successful reconciliation model in Al-Suqaylabiyah.
  • Enhancing the participation of youth, women, and civil society organizations in local stability and sustainable civil peace programs, so they can be active partners in shaping the future.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that this consensual reconciliation is an important step on the path to building the Syria of the future: a Syria that overcomes the wounds of the past, invests in the unity of its people, and establishes a state of law, justice, and dignity for all its citizens.
