On October 16, the world celebrates World Food Day, established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1981 to commemorate its founding on this day in 1945. This day affirms that the right to food is an inalienable, indivisible, and non-negotiable human right.
The Syrian Future Movement, which views the new Syria as a state of justice and dignity, views this day as a momentous national occasion, calling for reflection and responsibility. This day, in light of the devastation of agricultural infrastructure, the marginalization of rural communities, and the deprivation of millions of Syrians of the most basic necessities of life, most notably safe and adequate food, has been shaped by years of tyranny and war.
We, in the Syrian Future Movement, believe that the construction of a modern Syria cannot be completed without consolidating food sovereignty and ensuring access to food for every citizen, free from corruption, monopoly, and politicization. We affirm that food security must be a pillar of national policies and the new social contract that unites Syrians based on the values of freedom, justice, and equality.
On this occasion, the Future Political Movement calls for:
- Including the right to food in the upcoming Syrian constitution as an inalienable right.
- Supporting local agricultural production, empowering farmers, and protecting natural resources.
- Building food safety nets for the most vulnerable groups and ensuring school meals for children.
- Promoting a culture of healthy nutrition and linking food to national identity and human dignity.
- Opening up to international partnerships and leveraging expertise in building sustainable food systems.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that World Food Day is not merely a symbolic occasion, but a call for action, planning, and solidarity. The new Syria, rising from the rubble of tyranny, deserves to be a model of respect for human beings, ensuring their rights, and achieving food security, in a manner befitting the sacrifices of its people and their aspirations for a better tomorrow.
