To the committee investigating the events in Sweida

The Syrian Future Movement is closely following developments related to the work of the National Commission to Investigate the Events in As-Suwayda Governorate. The commission announced its practical steps and priorities for the next phase in its report issued on August 26, 2025.

While the Syrian Future Movement welcomes the formation of this commission, it views it as a first step toward establishing the principles of justice and accountability. It emphasizes the need for its work to be based on objectivity and independence, free from any political or security interference. It also emphasizes the need for it to be granted full powers to uncover the truth, including documenting violations, hearing from victims, and holding accountable those responsible for any abuses committed against civilians.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the commission’s success depends on three essential elements:

  • The Syrian government’s serious and transparent response to the commission’s recommendations, without selectivity or dilution, and ensuring that the investigation’s findings are translated into concrete measures that strengthen trust between the state and the local community.
  • Effective cooperation with international partners, especially the United Nations, to support the committee technically and technologically, and ensure its independence and credibility before local and international public opinion, in line with international human rights and transitional justice standards.
  • Provide alternative mechanisms for communicating with the people of Sweida, given the continued denial of the committee’s entry into the governorate by armed groups. This threatens the principle of transparency and hinders access to the truth.

In this context, the Syrian Future Movement calls for the adoption of innovative means of communication, such as establishing reception centers outside the governorate, utilizing secure online platforms, or coordinating with credible local civil society organizations.

The Syrian Future Movement cites similar experiences in this regard, including the experience of the Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA), which documented crimes in conflict zones through local and international networks.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that this moment requires political and moral courage, and that addressing the Sweida issue must be a gateway to restoring dignity to Syrian citizens, regardless of their position or affiliation, and that it must be built on the foundations of justice and national reconciliation, not on the logic of force or marginalization. The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the people of Sweida, who have paid a heavy price as a result of recent events, deserve to have their voices heard, their dignity respected, and those who violated their rights held accountable within a legal and institutional framework that preserves the country’s unity and safeguards its future.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on all national forces and the international community to support the committee’s work, monitor its outcomes, and work to transform this initiative into a starting point for comprehensive justice and genuine reconciliation that will put an end to the cycle of violence and violations and open the door to a more just future for all Syrians.
