With deep sorrow and legitimate anger, the Syrian Future Movement received the news of the assassination of artist Diala Solhi al-Wadi inside her home in the al-Maliki neighborhood of Damascus. This horrific crime, the severity of which cannot be comprehended, nor can its circumstances be justified.
This crime is a stark indicator of the moral and ethical erosion in the country, and the collapse of protection and oversight systems, even in the most secure and secure areas.
The Syrian Future Movement expresses its appreciation to the security forces who were able to uncover the circumstances of the crime in record time and arrest the perpetrator. It commends their role in enforcing the law and protecting the lives of citizens. This response should serve as an institutional model to be generalized and developed within the framework of independent and effective justice.
Accordingly, the Syrian Future Movement demands:
- Holding security agencies accountable for their previous laxity and activating internal accountability mechanisms to prevent the recurrence of such crimes.
- Strengthening community awareness to resist the normalization of violence and working to build a legal environment that preserves human dignity and deters crime.
- Making the murder of artist Diala a starting point for a national dialogue on the relationship between the authorities and intellectuals and the status of women in the public sphere.
The Syrian Future Movement, while offering its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased artist, affirms that justice is not limited to arresting the criminal,, but rather achieved by restoring Syrians’ trust in institutions, and by entrenching the right to life, accountability, and the restoration of rights.
