The Opening of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Damascus

The Syrian Future Movement is closely following the successful efforts to reopen the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Damascus after 13 years of closure. We consider this step a positive diplomatic initiative that enhances the path of international re-engagement with Syria and lays the foundation for constructive cooperation that serves the interests of peoples and contributes to regional and global stability.

The Syrian Future Movement views Germany’s decision to open its embassy, as a country with significant European and international influence, as an implicit acknowledgment of the importance of direct dialogue, respect for state sovereignty, and adherence to the principles of international law. It also reflects a serious desire to move beyond the phase of conflict and transition towards recovery and reconstruction while ensuring the Syrian people’s right to live in dignity and peace.

The Syrian Future Movement sees this decision as an opportunity to strengthen mutual trust between Syria and the international community. Therefore, we stress the need for this openness to be comprehensive, including lifting sanctions, supporting humanitarian and development efforts, and respecting the Syrian people’s will to determine their future without foreign interference.

The Syrian Future Movement values Germany’s move and calls on all countries that still have their embassies closed in Damascus or restrict their relations with Syria to promptly reassess their positions and adopt the same approach of wisdom and pragmatic diplomacy. Isolation only leads to further suffering, while dialogue and openness remain the best path to achieving security and shared prosperity.

The Syrian Future Movement reaffirms its commitment as a Syrian political movement to working seriously with all international and regional parties willing to support a comprehensive political process that ends the Syrian crisis and revives sustainable solutions based on justice and human rights. We also consider the return of diplomatic activity to Damascus a necessary step in strengthening international partnerships to address shared challenges—from terrorism to climate change, as well as refugee and economic crises.

The Syrian Future Movement hopes this step marks the beginning of a new phase that restores Syria’s natural role as a bridge between civilizations and a stabilizing force in a region that knows, more than any other, the cost of war and the necessity of peace.
