On this day in 2011, Colonel Ahmad Hijazi Hijazi (from the 18th Tank Division) announced his defection from the regime’s army and joined the Free Syrian Army. He cited “the army’s deviation from its national duties of defending the unarmed Syrian people, protecting the security gangs, and directing weapons at the people.”
