October 13th marks Ada Lovelace Day, an international event dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Launched globally in 2009, this occasion aims to highlight inspiring female role models and encourage young women to engage in digital knowledge-based innovation.

This celebration takes place at a time when Syrian women possess immense scientific potential, yet face a wall of obstacles resulting from years of war, persecution, and systematic deprivation of education.

Statistical reports on technology for 2026 indicate a stark digital and gender gap in the Middle East—and specifically in Syria—where women’s participation in programming and advanced technical innovation sectors does not exceed 18%. This disparity stems from the lack of educational and technological infrastructure, the forced migration of thousands of skilled Syrian academics, and the channeling of logistical and relief support solely toward consumer needs, neglecting the knowledge-based and sustainable development of women and youth.

On this occasion, the Syrian Future Movement addresses young Syrian women and educational institutions, emphasizing the following principles:

The Syrian Future Movement asserts that empowering women and girls in technology and modern sciences is an indispensable pillar for building an advanced civil society. A civilizational renaissance or a competitive national economy in the Syria of the future cannot be achieved while half of society remains excluded from driving the engine of contemporary digital and technical innovation. The Syrian Future Movement views the decline in Syrian women’s opportunities for advanced specialized education—and the confinement of their roles in displacement and refugee camps to mere relief-oriented activities—as a direct consequence of the repressive and destructive policies of the defunct authoritarian regime. That regime sought to keep generations uneducated and dismantle society’s intellectual fabric to ensure its continued hegemony.

The Syrian Future Movement considers investment in young female minds to be the true wealth capable of driving reconstruction and sustainable development. It urgently calls upon universities, institutes, and training centers in Syria to break away from traditional educational patterns and to open up attractive, free pathways for young women in technology and programming.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of protecting and nurturing Syrian female innovators and providing them with digital and economic incubators within the country. This is essential to halt the “brain drain” of Syrian talent abroad and to harness their creative energies in developing software and technical solutions that serve local communities.

Grounded in its civil and progressive vision, the Syrian Future Movement proposes a development roadmap to support young women in STEM fields:

  1. Launching the “Syrian Initiative for Women in Programming”: A forward-looking national program aimed at training girls and women—particularly in displacement camps and remote areas—in skills such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software development, in collaboration with international organizations.
  2. Establishing the “Future Incubator for Young Innovators”: An independent technology platform designed to fund and support tech and entrepreneurial projects led by Syrian female engineers and innovators, while connecting them to regional and international investment markets.
  3. Modernizing Curricula and Early Digital Education: Advocating for the reform of the existing Syrian educational system to integrate robotics and artificial intelligence from the foundational stages, and ensuring equal, non-discriminatory access to digital laboratories.
  4. Technological Excellence Grants: Allocating comprehensive annual scholarships and research grants—sponsored by the Movement—for high-achieving Syrian women in fields such as precision engineering and modern logistics.

The Syrian Future Movement extends a salute of pride and honor to every Syrian female engineer, scientist, innovator, and student who defies the rubble and the tents to raise Syria’s profile in intellectual and academic arenas; we believe their creative minds are the surest guarantee for building the future of a new, democratic, and civil Syria.
