The Syrian Future Movement is following with great interest the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s decision to appoint diplomat Ghazi bin Rafe’ al-Anzi as its new ambassador to the Syrian Arab Republic, succeeding Ambassador Faisal al-Mujfel.
Al-Anzi took the oath of office before Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, during a ceremony that included the appointment of new ambassadors to several countries.
This appointment comes within the context of steps that embody the depth of fraternal relations between the two brotherly countries and confirms the Kingdom’s keenness to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Damascus, building upon the achievements of the first phase of resuming diplomatic representation, which was led by Ambassador Faisal al-Mujfel.
The Syrian Future Movement notes that the appointment of Ambassador Ghazi bin Rafe’ al-Anzi carries three main implications:
First: It embodies the continuation of the positive momentum in Syrian-Saudi relations, moving beyond the initial consultation phase to a permanent appointment.
Al-Anzi is no ordinary diplomat; he has been in charge of relations with Syria for the past several years and headed the Saudi technical team that visited Damascus in May 2023 to prepare for the reopening of the Kingdom’s embassy.
This reflects a deep understanding of the issue and an ability to build on solid foundations.
Secondly, it indicates that Riyadh views Syria as a strategic partner and is preparing for a new phase of cooperation that goes beyond mere formal diplomatic procedures.
Al-Anzi, a prominent diplomat involved in relations with Syria, previously served as Director General of the General Department for Arab States at the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, lending his appointment a strategic dimension.
Thirdly, it reflects mutual confidence in the course of the transitional phase in Syria and serves as a reassuring message to the international community that Damascus has become a normal diplomatic hub, receiving ambassadors from brotherly and friendly nations.
We see this appointment as an indication that Saudi Arabia, as a key regional player, is investing in Syria’s stability and supporting the state-building process.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the appointment of the new ambassador, despite its importance, should not be viewed in isolation from the challenges facing the development of relations between the two countries, most notably:
- Transforming political momentum into tangible economic and investment cooperation. Saudi support for Syria needs to be embodied in practical development projects and real investments, not just a diplomatic presence.
- Strengthening coordination on regional issues, particularly in the areas of combating terrorism, border control, and joint security, in a way that serves the stability of both countries and the region.
- Ensuring the independence of Syrian decision-making within the framework of the fraternal relationship, so that Syrian national interests are the cornerstone of any cooperation, while keeping the door open to anything that strengthens a fair partnership.
Based on its national responsibility to monitor the state-building process, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
- Building on Ambassador Al-Anzi’s previous experience and leveraging his knowledge of the Syrian situation to develop mechanisms for bilateral cooperation, especially in the economic and developmental fields that represent a priority for the current phase.
- Activating joint follow-up mechanisms between the two sides to ensure that agreements and understandings are translated into concrete projects, in line with the spirit of “genuine agreements” emphasized by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa.
- Strengthening diplomatic coordination between the two countries in regional and international forums, which will contribute to supporting Syria’s position in its demand for the lifting of unjust economic sanctions and securing the necessary support for reconstruction.
- Involving the private sector and civil society in shaping future cooperation to ensure that the relationship is comprehensive and sustainable, and not limited to the official governmental framework.
The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its welcome of this step, which enhances Syria’s presence on the Arab and international stage and affirms Damascus’s return to its natural position as the capital of the Syrian Arab Republic.
We also note that the appointment of the new Saudi ambassador represents a genuine opportunity to develop fraternal relations between the two countries and transform them into a model of constructive Arab cooperation based on shared interests and mutual respect.
However, the Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the value of this step will be measured by the ability of both sides to translate it into tangible cooperation that contributes to improving the lives of Syrian citizens and supports the path of recovery and reconstruction.
The Syrian Future Movement will remain supportive of everything that strengthens the stability of Syria and the unity of its territory, critical of everything that threatens the path of recovery, monitoring everything that is accomplished on the ground, striving for a new Syria whose international relations are based on mutual interests and serious commitment.
