The Syrian Future Movement follows with great interest and appreciation the announcement issued by the Swedish government on Thursday, June 25, 2026, regarding the appointment of veteran diplomat Jessica Sverdström as the country’s new ambassador to the Syrian capital, Damascus, to assume her duties next August.
This step comes after years of reduced Swedish diplomatic representation in Syria, sending a strong message of support for the new path Syria is taking towards stability and development, and embodies growing international recognition of the Syrian government’s serious efforts in building the state and its institutions.
First: The Syrian Future Movement values Sweden’s appointment of a new ambassador to Damascus and commends it as a step reflecting a positive shift in the European position towards Syria.
The Syrian Future Movement also commends this diplomatic step, which ends years of limited diplomatic representation and confirms that Sweden, as an influential European country, is preparing to actively engage in supporting the Syrian recovery process.
This appointment is seen as a continuation of the historic visit by a high-level Swedish delegation to Damascus in November 2015, which included the Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Benjamin Dossa, and the Minister for Migration, Johan Forssell. During that visit, the two sides discussed vital issues such as the establishment of a Syrian-Swedish Business Council, addressing migration and refugee issues, developing diplomatic relations, transitional justice, and reconstruction.
We also note that the new ambassador, who currently serves as Sweden’s ambassador to Beirut and has previously held posts in Baghdad and Bamako, possesses extensive diplomatic experience, making her well-positioned to play a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Second: The Syrian Future Movement notes that this diplomatic development comes within the context of a growing international momentum to support Syria and enhances opportunities for economic and investment cooperation. We observe that the appointment of the new Swedish ambassador coincides with a series of international moves supporting Syria, most notably the joint Gulf-American statement issued on June 25, 2016, which affirmed support for Syria’s sovereignty and unity and the international community’s readiness to work with the Syrian government in combating terrorism, restoring services, and improving the investment climate. We also see this international rapprochement as a genuine opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation, especially in light of the announcement of the establishment of a Syrian-Swedish Business Council aimed at encouraging investment and developing economic relations.
Third: The Syrian Future Movement expresses cautious optimism and offers a set of recommendations to ensure that this diplomatic momentum is leveraged to enhance bilateral cooperation and achieve common interests.
While we appreciate this positive step, the Syrian Future Movement reiterates that the true success of diplomatic relations is not measured by the level of representation, but rather by its ability to achieve tangible results that benefit both countries.
Based on its national responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
- Activating the role of the Syrian-Swedish Business Council and working to organize regular meetings between businesspeople and investors from both sides to identify promising investment opportunities in the energy, reconstruction, and food industries, following the successful experiences of other countries.
- Strengthening cooperation on migration and refugee issues by establishing clear mechanisms to facilitate the voluntary and dignified return of Syrian refugees from Sweden and providing the necessary support for their reintegration into society, in line with the Syrian government’s commitment in its statement issued on June 20, 2016, to create suitable conditions for the return of displaced persons.
- Leveraging Swedish expertise in transitional justice and reconstruction, given Sweden’s pioneering experience in national reconciliation and institution building, and its potential to be a valuable partner in developing these areas in Syria, as discussed during the Swedish delegation’s visit in November 2025.
- Strengthening diplomatic coordination between the two countries in international forums to support Syria’s efforts to lift economic sanctions and restore its rightful place in the international community, and working to remove obstacles hindering bilateral cooperation.
In conclusion, the Syrian Future Movement reiterates its welcome of this important diplomatic step and highly values Sweden’s supportive stance towards the path of a new Syria. The Movement emphasizes that this appointment represents a message of international confidence in Syria’s ability to overcome the challenges of this phase and affirms that diplomatic openness is a fundamental gateway to achieving economic recovery and sustainable development.
We call on the Syrian government to capitalize on this momentum, strengthen cooperation with international partners, and continue the reform process so that the new Syria can be an active partner in the international community, capable of fulfilling its people’s aspirations for freedom, dignity, and prosperity. For its part, the Syrian Future Movement will remain supportive, critical, and observant of this path, striving to build the new Syria on the foundations of sovereignty, dignity, and sustainable development.
